A government-appointed inquiry panel in Bangladesh has flagged major irregularities in the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) elections held in October 2025, citing allegations ranging from vote manipulation and intimidation to bias and procedural breaches. The five-member committee, led by former justice AKM Asaduzzaman, submitted its findings to the sports ministry on Sunday, concluding that the electoral process was neither genuinely free nor adequately transparent. The report described evidence of voters being pressured, along with multiple violations of proper procedure. It also highlighted a pattern of repeated non-cooperation from senior BCB officials during the course of the investigation. Former BCB president Aminul Islam did not take part in an in-person hearing, choosing instead to provide a written submission. Even so, the panel\u2019s overall conclusion pointed to involvement not only by BCB officials but also by individuals inside the sports ministry in efforts to steer the election outcome.<\/p>\n
At a press conference on Tuesday, National Sports Council (NSC) sports director Mohammed Aminul Ahesan laid out the report\u2019s main conclusions. He said the elections fell short on fairness and credibility, stressing that intimidation of voters and widespread procedural problems undermined the integrity of the process. Ahesan added that the government had adequate grounds to dissolve the BCB board led by Aminul. He then announced an 11-member ad hoc committee that will manage the board for the next three months.<\/p>\n
A key change announced during the briefing was the appointment of Tamim Iqbal, the former Bangladesh captain, as the new president of the BCB. Ahesan\u2019s comments also recalled that Tamim had previously accused Aminul of abusing his authority as BCB president only four weeks before last year\u2019s election.<\/p>\n
In explaining the background to the dispute, Ahesan referred to events that began on March 10, 2026. He said former councillors, including Shariful Alam, lodged a complaint concerning district and divisional sports associations, specifically pointing to the deadline for submitting councillors\u2019 names in that category. Letters were reportedly issued to relevant authorities on September 1 and 2, stating that the submission deadline would be September 17. The BCB then extended that timeline to September 19 and later to September 22.<\/p>\n
According to Ahesan, the committee believed the deadline was extended without a proper basis and with ulterior intent, with the aim of replacing previously nominated councillors with preferred individuals and creating a pathway for them to be elected as directors. He underscored that these developments were central to the inquiry\u2019s assessment of the election\u2019s credibility.<\/p>\n
The report also raised questions about the use of authority under the BCB Constitution. It stated that, under Article 9.3.3, the president does not have the power to independently nominate ten former cricketers as councillors. On that basis, the panel claimed that Aminul Islam Bulbul, acting as BCB president, overstepped his authority by unilaterally nominating ten former cricketers as councillors. The committee described this as a clear abuse of power and a violation of constitutional rules.<\/p>\n
Further, the panel said Aminul Islam Bulbul\u2019s unilateral nominations had a meaningful influence on the election process. It alleged that those nominated councillors received benefits, and that their presence could have potentially affected the election outcome.<\/p>\n
Serious concerns were also raised regarding the e-voting process. The report asserted that Aminul and officials from the NSC were found to have manipulated e-voting, a finding the committee said was reinforced by voter interviews. Several voters described the system as \u201cpre-planned.\u201d<\/p>\n
The inquiry stated that e-voting was conducted from a specific location and that the confidentiality of votes was not preserved, which it said contradicts basic democratic norms and the BCB constitution. It further noted that many voters were reportedly present at the polling venue on the day when physical voting for e-voters took place.<\/p>\n
While the report acknowledged that voters had an opportunity to cast their ballots directly, it claimed that e-voting instead happened by gathering voters together at the Sheraton Hotel in the capital on the night of October 5. The committee said the overall setup appeared to it to be consistent with vote rigging.<\/p>\n
