Mumbai Indians\u2019 IPL 2026 campaign has come to an early end, with the five-time champions among the first franchises to fall away from playoff contention. With the season\u2019s fallout already well underway\u2014and with fresh debates centring on what the team should keep and what it should discard\u2014the conversation has taken a sharper turn around leadership and squad balance. Much of the scrutiny has been directed at Hardik Pandya\u2019s captaincy, alongside concerns that key performers failed to hit their stride and that the playing group often appeared out of sync. In the middle of that shifting focus, former England captain Michael Vaughan has floated a surprising personnel idea that could also open a door for Kolkata Knight Riders.<\/p>\n
Vaughan, speaking in an interview, did not hesitate when asked what should happen to Hardik. His immediate view was that Mumbai should let him go. From there, he added an alternative plan: rather than simply moving on, he suggested a swap\u2014replacing Hardik with Cameron Green.<\/p>\n
Vaughan later expanded on why the move back to Mumbai, after two strong seasons with Gujarat Titans, never made complete sense to him. Hardik\u2019s first spell outside Mumbai had included major success, including back-to-back finals for Gujarat, one of which ended in a championship. Despite that, Vaughan said he struggled to understand the rationale for bringing him into Mumbai\u2019s setup again, especially with the team already carrying multiple high-profile decision-makers.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo. I have seen enough,\u201d Vaughan remarked, adding that he felt Mumbai had too many \u201cchefs in the kitchen\u201d rather than a single clear direction. In his view, Hardik had already performed well in a different environment\u2014with a different squad and coaching staff\u2014and the dynamic of returning didn\u2019t appear to hearken back to what had worked previously.<\/p>\n
Former KKR team director Joy Bhattacharjya aligned with Vaughan\u2019s argument, suggesting the captaincy experiment simply did not deliver the intended results. Bhattacharjya noted that Hardik\u2019s second stint with Mumbai began before the 2024 season, and while the skipper managed to guide the side to a Qualifier 2 finish in his most recent campaign, the overall record across his time with the franchise did not meet expectations.<\/p>\n
He pointed out that Mumbai missed the playoffs twice during the period, including a bottom-place finish in Hardik\u2019s debut season as captain. However, Bhattacharjya also acknowledged the one high point: the Qualifier 2 showing last season.<\/p>\n
\u201cRelease him. He has had three seasons with him, and clearly the experiment hasn\u2019t worked,\u201d Bhattacharjya said, reinforcing the belief that keeping Hardik only as a player would not be practical. In his assessment, it would be hard for Hardik to settle into a purely non-leadership role, and it would ultimately be better for both parties if Mumbai and the player moved in different directions.<\/p>\n
Vaughan then explained the specific reason behind the Green-Hardik swap. If Hardik intends to continue his captaincy career, Vaughan argued that he would likely need to do so with a fresh set of leadership options and a new structure. He suggested that KKR could be the destination for that kind of transition, especially given their own upcoming captaincy questions.<\/p>\n
Vaughan\u2019s view was straightforward: KKR will be looking for a new captain for next season, and that is precisely why the swap involving Green and Hardik makes sense to him.<\/p>\n
That claim is tied to the situation at KKR this year. The franchise is expected to search for a new leader after a disappointing run under Ajinkya Rahane, who struggled both as a captain and as a batter during the season.<\/p>\n
There was also a recent report that Rahane is among the captains who could lose their role at the end of the campaign. Even so, Vaughan\u2019s proposal did not hinge on Green being released. The wider expectation around Green is that he would remain a key part of Mumbai\u2019s planning if the franchise chose to move on from Hardik instead of reworking its batting-bowling core.<\/p>\n
Cameron Green, the player at the centre of Vaughan\u2019s suggestion, was bought for INR 25.20 crore at last year\u2019s auction. While he had a difficult opening stretch in IPL 2026, he later found momentum and has accumulated 316 runs in 13 innings so far.
