India\u2019s cricket governing body is reportedly keeping a close watch on Rohit Sharma\u2019s fitness as the 2027 World Cup approaches, with concern centred on whether the senior batter can remain injury-free through a demanding lead-up schedule. Rohit was named for India\u2019s three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, beginning on June 14, but his availability is still understood to be dependent on how his body responds to training and match workloads.<\/p>\n

Fitness worries and a changing selection picture<\/h2>\n

  1. Rohit was sidelined earlier this season due to a hamstring issue and missed four matches for the Mumbai Indians.<\/li>\n
  2. He returned with a strong half-century, yet he has since been used primarily as an Impact Sub in ODIs, a role that is believed to raise questions about how his body copes with full-time demands.<\/li>\n
  3. Reports claim Rohit did not report to the Board\u2019s Centre of Excellence (COE) during a three-week window around that period.<\/li>\n
  4. The same reports suggest his leaner build is not the main issue; rather, there are doubts about whether he can handle the physical load required for high-performance cricket.<\/li>\n
  5. In ODI cricket, the fielding requirement is continuous for extended spells, and the structure does not offer the kind of Impact Player option seen in the IPL.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    There is also said to be a shift in how Rohit and Virat Kohli are being viewed in selection discussions, largely because of the contrast in their current fitness trajectories. While Rohit has continued to deal with recurring injury concerns, Kohli is being highlighted for consistently maintaining a high level of physical readiness. Even when Kohli is away from India, he is reported to keep working through indoor training sessions at Lord\u2019s, which is why form dips associated with extended downtime are less common in his case.<\/p>\n

    On the batting front, Rohit\u2019s recent output has not been a concern, with four fifties and a century in his most recent 10 ODI innings. Still, despite the weight changes that have been noted, the key factor for the future is how his body holds up when the demands increase closer to the World Cup.<\/p>\n

    It is also understood that the decision-making process may need to become more definitive after consultations with the BCCI medical team. One view being expressed is that Kohli and Rohit can no longer be considered in the same fitness bracket, and that Rohit\u2019s long-term role may depend on whether his current injury pattern stabilises.<\/p>\n

    If fitness worries continue, the BCCI may look to prepare an alternative opening plan. Ishan Kishan has been selected for the three Afghanistan ODIs scheduled for June 14, June 17 and June 20, while Yashasvi Jaiswal is still waiting for his opportunity.
