With the IPL 2026 playoffs picture narrowing, one spot and four teams are still in the race after Chennai Super Kings slipped to Gujarat Titans. That means Rajasthan Royals (14), Punjab Kings (13), Kolkata Knight Riders (13), and Delhi Capitals (12) are fighting it out for the single remaining place in the playoffs, and every one of them must win their final match to keep their chances alive.<\/p>\n
There is, however, a very slim route for Rajasthan Royals to sneak through even if they lose their last game. For that to happen, RR would need a strong run-rate scenario and would rely on other results going against their rivals. The key fixture is Delhi Capitals versus KKR in the last round. Should RR want to advance despite defeat, DC must beat KKR\u2014but only by a controlled margin rather than a huge one, as the numbers would need to fall in RR\u2019s favour.<\/p>\n
Gujarat Titans\u2019 batting top order provided the platform for a commanding win, and the final result underlined how close they are to sealing a top-two finish. CSK were made to chase a formidable total after GT posted 229 for four on a true batting surface. Shubman Gill struck 64 off 37 balls, while Sai Sudharsan contributed 84 off 53, and the pair\u2019s impact was underlined by a record seventh century partnership for their team combination. Jos Buttler then provided the late surge, smashing 57 not out off 27 balls as the innings turned decisively in GT\u2019s favour with a flurry of boundaries in the second half.<\/p>\n
CSK\u2019s hopes were fading early. Entering the game with only a slim chance of making the playoffs, they lost momentum in the powerplay, slipping to four wickets for 51 runs. The chase ended with CSK all out for 140 in 13.4 overs. Shivam Dube offered a late burst with a six-hitting cameo of 47 off 17, but the rest of the batting couldn\u2019t keep up the required tempo.<\/p>\n
For the third season in a row, the five-time champions failed to reach the playoffs. Mohammed Siraj played a major role in that collapse, taking three wickets in the first six overs, including the dismissal of Sanju Samson. Samson edged the opening ball of the CSK innings, offering a faint deviation to Buttler, and that early breakthrough set the tone for a relentless start from GT. Kagiso Rabada added another blow in the same early stretch by trapping Matthew Short, catching him at mid-on after a ball that held its line with slight seam movement back into play. Short couldn\u2019t get the connection right, and GT\u2019s advantage only grew. The Titans then finished their campaign stage with nine wins from 14 matches, collecting 18 points. Sunrisers Hyderabad can still reach 18 points as well if they win against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on the following day, given that RCB are already sitting on 18.<\/p>\n
From here, the top two sides among the playoff qualifiers will get two opportunities to reach the final, which is scheduled for May 31 in Ahmedabad. With points and permutations tightening, every ball in the remaining matches is now likely to carry extra weight.<\/p>\n
Earlier in the match, Gill looked dangerous from the first over, particularly against left-arm pacer Spencer Johnson during the powerplay where GT piled on 62 runs. Gill reached his fifty in 23 balls, while Sudharsan took 35 deliveries to move to the milestone \u2014 his fifth consecutive half-century. The bulk of the runs came during their 125-run stand, which was formed off 74 balls, and it set up GT to dominate the rest of the chase.<\/p>\n
Gill\u2019s boundary work off Johnson stood out as a batting masterclass, blending controlled timing with his usual smoothness. The fours included a cut off Johnson\u2019s very first ball, followed by Gill using the crease effectively against the left-arm pacer to find boundaries repeatedly. The straight drive that arrived in the same phase was one of the most impressive shots of the innings. When Noor Ahmad entered after the powerplay, having been brought in during the period that produced 62 runs, Gill refused to let him settle and launched him for a pair of sixes through slog-sweeping.<\/p>\n
They also reached a 100-run partnership for the seventh time, coming shortly after the initial tempo was established and surpassing the century stand benchmarks previously set by other IPL combinations, including pairs like David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan, as well as Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma. Each of those duos had earlier produced six century partnerships in IPL history, and GT\u2019s achievement added another notable mark to the tournament\u2019s record books.<\/p>\n
With the openers hardly troubled, Gujarat Titans cruised to 111 without loss in 10 overs. After Gill\u2019s departure, Sudharsan and Buttler kept the momentum steady, taking GT beyond the 200 mark.
