On Thursday, CSK were outplayed by a composed Shubman Gill-led effort, and their tournament exit was confirmed soon after the match. The result was bad enough, but the fallout was even sharper: the IPL Governing Council then announced sanctions for CSK\u2019s entire squad.<\/p>\n<h3>Quick facts<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>CSK lost to Gujarat Titans by 89 runs in IPL 2026, in a match played on Thursday.<\/li>\n<li>Chennai were chasing a target of 230 runs when their innings stalled.<\/li>\n<li>Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad received a fine of Rs 24 lakh for a slow over-rate.<\/li>\n<li>Because it was his second offence of the season, the full CSK team (including the Impact Player) was reprimanded and penalised.<\/li>\n<li>The IPL also stated that other players would be fined Rs 6 lakh each, or 25% of match fees (whichever is lower).<\/li>\n<li>The first slow-over offence is noted as having happened in Match 18, before Match 66.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>CSK\u2019s chase never got going in the right direction. They lost wicket-keeper batter Sanju Samson for a golden duck early, a blow that set the tone for the rest of the innings. Shivam Dube did provide the only real spark with a 17-ball 47, but the rest of the batting struggled to build momentum against Gujarat\u2019s control and discipline.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Dube\u2019s effort, Chennai were unable to close the gap and ultimately suffered the heavy 89-run defeat, which also knocked them out of the play-off race. The match became another marker in a campaign where CSK struggled to find consistency at key moments, whether with bat or when it came to managing the game\u2019s tempo.<\/p>\n<h3>IPL punishment after Match 66<\/h3>\n<p>In its official statement, the IPL Governing Council confirmed that Gaikwad\u2019s fine was Rs 24 lakh, linked to CSK maintaining a slow over-rate during Match 66 of the season. The game was played against the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.<\/p>\n<p>The IPL release also clarified that this was not Gaikwad\u2019s first such case in 2026. It described the situation as his team\u2019s second slow-over offence of the season, with the earlier incident recorded in Match 18, and it referenced Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which covers minimum over-rate requirements.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of the second offence, Gaikwad was fined INR 24 lakhs, while the rest of the Playing XI\u2014including the Impact Player\u2014were sanctioned as well. The league\u2019s wording made it clear that each of those players would face a penalty of INR 6 lakhs or 25% of their respective match fees, whichever figure is lower.<\/p>\n<p>With MS Dhoni\u2019s next steps still uncertain, and multiple players finding it difficult to consistently deliver, CSK\u2019s management now faces a difficult planning task.
