Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has openly acknowledged how taxing IPL 2026 has been for the franchise, highlighting captain Hardik Pandya at the centre of a campaign marked by repeated setbacks and injury trouble. Speaking ahead of MI\u2019s match against Rajasthan Royals in Mumbai at the Wankhede Stadium, Jayawardene pointed to on-field moments of strain\u2014while also insisting that such flashes of emotion should not be read too deeply.<\/p>\n

Jayawardene on MI\u2019s pressure and Pandya\u2019s frustration<\/h2>\n

  1. Jayawardene said Hardik has been dealing with injury as well as a run of defeats, describing the overall stretch as difficult for both the captain and the wider squad.<\/li>\n
  2. He referenced a specific incident during MI\u2019s match against Kolkata Knight Riders, where a catch dropped in the area between Robin Minz and Deepak Chahar triggered visible anger from Pandya.<\/li>\n
  3. Jayawardene noted that the moment did not reflect a lack of effort, but rather the frustration that can surface when things go wrong in the heat of a game.<\/li>\n
  4. He added that the reaction should not be over-interpreted, even though it was clearly evident on the field.<\/li>\n
  5. Jayawardene explained the key detail of the incident: it happened on the fourth ball of the 10th over of the second innings. As Pandya walked back toward his run-up, he struck the stumps with force after the wicket had been disturbed.<\/li>\n
  6. He then broadened the point, arguing that while MI have the players and the squad strength to perform well, they have struggled as a group to execute consistently throughout the season.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \u201cHardik was also injured, but then came the continuous defeats,\u201d Jayawardene said. \u201cWe saw the catch that fell between Robin Minz and Deepak Chahar in the last game. I think he got too frustrated and broke the stumps in possession. In that situation, obviously, it\u2019s frustrating for any bowler. You can\u2019t read too much into it. But yes, the same frustration was there on the field. Overall, I think it\u2019s hard not just for Hardik, but for all of us to go through a season where we know we have the talent and the squad, but we weren\u2019t able to execute and perform to the best of our ability.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Disciplinary action for Pandya<\/h2>\n

    Alongside the team\u2019s struggles, Pandya has also faced league discipline. He was fined 10% of his match fee and received one Demerit Point for breaching Level 1 of the IPL\u2019s Code of Conduct for players and team officials. The breach relates to the match versus Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

    What\u2019s at stake for MI vs RR<\/h2>\n

    With MI already eliminated from IPL 2026, they will aim to finish their campaign with a positive result. Rajasthan Royals, meanwhile, will be looking to win and secure their place in the playoffs.
