Average winning score: 217.57 \u2014 highest for an IPL season.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nThe near-10 run rate has turned 200-plus totals into a regular feature rather than an exception. This season\u2019s 200-run barrier has been crossed 61 times, which is nine more than the previous best of 52 set in 2025.<\/p>\n
Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings have been central to that trend, each producing nine separate 200-plus team totals\u2014the most by any side in a single T20 tournament. Punjab Kings have also conceded nine 200-plus scores, a record in itself.<\/p>\n
The most striking twist with those big first-innings scores has been how frequently they have been chased down. When a team posted 200-plus while batting first, the eventual results across the 35 matches produced a 19-16 win-loss split\u2014suggesting targets were not only reachable, but often converted.<\/p>\n
Targets of 220 or more have been particularly common in IPL 2026. A total of nine such chases have been completed this year, whereas the combined history of the previous 18 seasons saw it happen just five times.<\/p>\n
On average, the season has been built for fireworks. In full 20-over contests, teams have averaged 192.04 in the first innings, while the typical score needed to win has climbed to 217.57\u2014both the highest marks recorded in any IPL season.<\/p>\n
Hundreds, sixes and tempo at the player level<\/h3>\n
Individually, the season\u2019s century tally stands at 14, which is tied for the most in an IPL campaign, alongside 2024. However, six of those 14 hundreds have come in losing causes\u2014also the highest number of \u201ccentury in defeat\u201d instances for a single IPL season.<\/p>\n
Power-hitting has surged even further. So far, 1,349 sixes have been struck\u2014an IPL season high\u2014and the average number of balls per six is 11.66, almost a ball fewer than the previous best. The 1,294 sixes recorded in 2025 was the prior ceiling, and it was surpassed in the 68th match of this year.<\/p>\n
During the league stage, Punjab Kings struck 163 sixes\u2014the most by any team in that phase\u2014while Sunrisers Hyderabad hit 162. The overall franchise record for sixes in a tournament is 178, also belonging to SRH from IPL 2024, and that figure is now within reach if they can extend their run in the playoffs.<\/p>\n
Scoring rates have been aggressive from ball one, and that early intent has shaped the season. Across the first three overs, teams have posted a run rate of 9.52, the highest recorded for any IPL season.<\/p>\n
That said, the batting average in those opening three overs\u2014runs per wicket\u2014has been 32.56, the lowest since 2022, when it was 28.09. Even then, 2022\u2019s run rate was lower at 6.83. Since 2015, only 2016 (32.42) and 2020 (29.14) have seen opening-three-over wicket averages lower, and in those years the scoring rate stayed under seven.<\/p>\n
Even when wickets fall, batters have not stepped back from risk-taking. The result has been a first-six-overs run rate above 10 for the first time, and the same ultra-attacking trend shows up clearly in the seventh over. It used to be a comfortable period for bowling sides\u2014batters would often settle after the powerplay\u2014but IPL 2026 has moved past that pattern.<\/p>\n
In the seventh over this season, the run rate is 9.09, nearly a run higher than the previous high of 8.15 from 2025. The comparison stretches further back too: 7.27 in 2023 and 7.81 in 2024.<\/p>\n
The Impact Player rule, introduced in 2023, has also played a role in how batters plan their innings. By 2024, the average runs per innings by top-four batters reached 28.82\u2014the highest at that point\u2014while balls faced per innings dropped to 18.82, the lowest ever.<\/p>\n
Batters at the top are no longer so focused on building a long grind, but the output has risen anyway. Average runs per innings climbed to 30.41 in 2025 and 31.20 in 2026, while the balls faced stayed relatively contained at 19.53 in 2025 and 19.14 in 2026.<\/p>\n
Indian batters have also helped drive the high strike rates seen across IPL 2026. Of the 21 Indian batters who have faced 200-plus balls this season, six have struck at 170-plus, while just one out of eight overseas batters who have faced the same volume has managed a 170-plus strike rate.<\/p>\n
Collectively, Indian batters have scored at 156.24 this season\u2014slightly above overseas players at 155.14\u2014marking the first IPL season where the Indian scoring rate has edged past the overseas group. Still, overseas batters have more time to play, with more playoff matches to come that could lift their strike rate further.<\/p>\n
Spinners under pressure, pace at a cost<\/h3>\n
The scoring environment has made captains cautious about using spinners, particularly when conditions have not offered much assistance. For every over bowled by pace in this IPL, spinners have delivered only 2.64 balls.<\/p>\n
That is the third-lowest ratio of spin to pace overs in an IPL season. The lowest ever was in 2008, when spinners bowled just 1.81 balls for every pace over, at a time when the belief was that spin did not suit T20 cricket. The 2013 edition ranks second at 2.49.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, fast bowling has been the bigger headache for fielding sides too. Pacer averages have been 32.31 at an economy rate of 9.94\u2014both the worst figures for fast bowlers in a season.<\/p>\n
Spinners, despite their reduced usage, have also carried a heavy run burden. Their economy has gone up to 9.26 runs per over, the most expensive for them in any IPL season, while their average of 33.43 is only the fourth-worst. A key reason is wicket frequency: spinners have taken a wicket every 21.6 balls, their third-best strike rate.<\/p>\n
In the league-stage wicket charts, only two of the top ten wicket-takers are spinners. Rashid Khan sits fifth with 19 wickets, and Sunil Narine is tenth with 15.<\/p>\n
Rashid is set to remain the only spinner inside the top ten when IPL 2026 finishes. This has happened just once before\u2014in 2016, when Yuzvendra Chahal was second with 21 wickets.<\/p>\n
Batting\u2019s freedom has been helped by catching woes as well. Across IPL 2026 so far, 169 catches have been missed in total. Still, catching efficiency at 78.98% is marginally better than the previous two seasons\u201476.79% in 2025 and 78.44% in 2024.<\/p>\n
Yet batters have turned those chances into more runs than they have in recent years. In 2026, each dropped catch has cost a batter an average of 24.37 runs\u2014the highest since 2018 and higher than the 22.36 average in 2025.<\/p>\n
Punjab Kings have been responsible for the most dropped catches this season, with 20, a major factor in their slide during the second half. Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad are tied for second with 19 drops each, but Gujarat Titans have managed an 81.5% catching efficiency\u2014the second-best among all teams.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
