The captain has an opportunity to enter a rare club of leaders who have lifted back-to-back IPL crowns. Yet the path that brought him here has been anything but conventional.

When MS Dhoni guided Chennai Super Kings to the title in 2010-11, his greatness was already firmly established. He had captained India to the T20 World Cup triumph in 2007 and had driven the team to the summit of the Test rankings in 2009, making his impact extend far beyond domestic cricket.

By the time Rohit Sharma steered Mumbai Indians to consecutive IPL wins in 2019-20, he too was already an accomplished franchise captain and a proven international leader, having captained India to an Asia Cup success. He also carried the momentum of a standout 2019 ODI World Cup, where he produced a record haul of five centuries.

Patidar’s story differs sharply. His last appearance for India came in early 2024, after which he was dropped following disappointing returns in three Tests. Since then, national selection has not been on the table. Still, his IPL 2026 numbers have pulled him back into the discussion for a potential T20I role, with 486 runs scored at a strike rate of 196.76.

That context is exactly why RCB’s decision to hand him the captaincy in early 2025 looked like a bold bet. Patidar was asked to deliver something that several illustrious figures—Rahul Dravid, Kevin Pietersen, Anil Kumble, Daniel Vettori and Virat Kohli among them—had not managed during their respective stints as leaders at RCB.

After tasting title success with the side last year, Patidar now stands at the threshold of defining his personal legacy. With Diageo in the process of transferring ownership to a new consortium—an event that stunned many due to the valuation—Ahmedabad could become the backdrop for the end of one era and the beginning of another.

From a leadership pitch to a final-stage captain

Two years ago in Dharamsala, Patidar first fielded questions about the possibility of captaining RCB.

In June of that year, RCB director Mo Bobat and coach Andy Flower invited him to a review meeting, where they were seriously considering him but were not fully committed to the idea.

During that discussion, they asked him to “put on the captaincy hat” and identify a major problem they needed to solve.

Rather than leaning on generic leadership phrases, Patidar delivered a pointed message: “We need to build a gun pace attack.” The simplicity of that answer became an early sign that the management felt he could handle the role.

During the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25, he led Madhya Pradesh to the final, strengthening the case further—particularly with Chandrakant Pandit serving as his coach and having long believed Patidar carried leadership traits.

He finished as the tournament’s second-highest run-scorer and struck at 186.08, underlining that captaincy responsibilities did not blunt his batting.

Venkatesh Iyer, Patidar’s current RCB teammate and also connected to the Madhya Pradesh set-up, offered a window into how Patidar thought when he captained earlier in the cycle. Speaking during the latest Ranji Trophy season, Iyer said he enjoyed playing under him and that Patidar kept things straightforward in the dressing room—fewer pep talks, fewer meetings, and more focus on tactics and plans. In Iyer’s view, simplicity is about trusting the people you back: if players can deliver, there is little value in overcomplicating matters.

Iyer added that Patidar’s approach is rooted in faith in specific skill sets. If a bowler like Bhuvneshwar Kumar can strike early, there is no need to over-analyse the situation—just trust the person to execute. Iyer stressed that Patidar’s thought process is hard to “decode,” yet what becomes visible is that he backs his players and allows them to be themselves.

Flower and Bobat closely tracked Patidar’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign. By January 2025, they had largely settled on their decision and sought Virat Kohli’s approval, which came with full support. Patidar was then formally appointed as captain in February 2025.

That early exchange at the RCB review meeting reflected what Patidar’s leadership is built on: clarity, a low-drama communication style, and the willingness to speak directly. At a media interaction, he described his temperament as calm and not overly expressive, saying you cannot read much from his face because it is simply his nature—not an act.

Iyer also supported that portrayal. The two grew up playing club cricket at Indore’s Vijay Club and, despite contrasting personalities—one more outgoing, the other more reserved—they bonded through their batting partnerships in the middle. Over time, their relationship has grown into a friendship that goes beyond cricket.

Still, none of that helped in the IPL 2026 auction, because Iyer couldn’t interpret anything from Patidar’s face at that stage. Iyer recalled that the auction was in Pune, and he kept pestering Patidar about whether RCB would consider him; Patidar gave him nothing but repeated answers of not knowing. Then, once Iyer was picked, Patidar knocked on his door and welcomed him, after which Iyer admitted he would have had far less stress if Patidar had been able to tell him sooner.

The anecdote captured a trait teammates often mention: Patidar’s outward calm almost never shifts, and his poker-faced approach reveals little about what he might be thinking.

Off the field, Patidar is portrayed as someone who stays in his own orbit and is not easily pulled into external noise. Iyer said that in Indore, Patidar “lives in a quiet corner,” and even during the off-season, you would not know what he is doing if you happen to see him around town—he comes across as relaxed and laid-back.

Jitesh Sharma, another RCB player from the Central Zone who shares a close bond with Patidar, spoke about their connection as “two small-town boys.” In their company, talk is not about flashy cars or watches; it is about life. Jitesh said Patidar has a tight circle of friends he trusts and feels at ease with, and that in a large gathering, he often sits comfortably in a quiet corner. Jitesh described how a single glance can be enough for both to quietly slip away when needed. On match days, the communication can be even more direct—one look that effectively asks whether a review is needed, with Jitesh nodding and Patidar signalling back.

A glimpse of how Patidar compartmentalises came from a moment on the eve of the IPL 2025 final. Jitesh said that after training and after Patidar completed his pre-final media commitments at the stadium, the group—friends and family included—went out for pani puri at night. Jitesh noted that looking at Patidar, you would not have guessed he was about to play the biggest match of his career within hours.

AB de Villiers, Patidar’s RCB teammate during his debut season in 2021, summed up the shift in perception in a way that felt telling—at least, as he put it on commentary. When the RCB management first floated Patidar’s name internally as a captaincy possibility, de Villiers—an RCB legend—was among those consulted. De Villiers responded positively with “Good choice,” but added that he had not really seen Patidar speak at the time.

That observation speaks to an early leadership challenge. Patidar was never the loud alpha type, nor was he the life of the party. He rarely takes over conversations at team huddles, and he is not constantly hovering beside coaches seeking extra opinions from the dugout. Yet over the last two seasons, the RCB leadership has increasingly concluded that Patidar does his most effective thinking once the game begins.

Bobat recently pointed to a clear division of roles in Patidar’s captaincy system. Patidar trusts the management to create the right environment around him, while the management believes Patidar is best placed to manage the game once the players step onto the field.

Bobat said Patidar wants to offer input on the side that takes the field, and then believes his real work starts at the boundary line. He has developed a stronger sense of how he wants the team to play, becoming a more confident decision-maker during matches—especially regarding tactics and bowling changes.

That tactical clarity is increasingly evident in Patidar’s on-field decisions. It helps explain his unwavering backing of Jitesh during difficult stretches, even when there might have been temptation to rebalance the squad and explore the option of Jordan Cox, particularly since Phil Salt—the other wicketkeeper—spent large parts of the season dealing with injury.

It also sheds light on a high-pressure choice against Delhi Capitals, where the result was hanging in the balance. Patidar decided to bowl out Bhuvneshwar and Josh Hazlewood before the 20th over rather than holding one back as a late insurance option. He chose to trust Romario Shepherd instead, a plan that did not work out in the end—but the intent was clear: Patidar wanted his primary bowlers to finish the contest earlier, rather than having to deal with “what-if” scenarios later.

Patidar’s instincts showed again in Qualifier 1 against Gujarat Titans. With the chase effectively under control, he still kept Shepherd in the attack. Rahul Tewatia launched a brief assault, but Patidar was not concerned by a tightening margin. In his thinking, those overs for Shepherd—brought in as an Impact Player—could provide valuable match “legs” if he needed to bowl again in the final.

Throughout, Patidar’s leadership has remained consistent: straightforward thinking, trust in personnel, and a willingness to stick with decisions even when they carry risk. That consistency is reflected in de Villiers’ reaction after Qualifier 1, which felt especially revealing.

As Patidar led RCB into another final and also produced one of the defining knocks of the campaign, de Villiers smiled on commentary and said: “Rajat. O Captain! My Captain!”

Four years ago, Patidar announced himself to the wider cricket world by smashing the first century by an uncapped Indian in the playoffs. Four nights ago, he rose to the occasion again, striking an outstanding 33-ball 93 not out to force RCB into the final. On Sunday, he has the chance to make that story complete and cement his legacy.

Rajat Patidar will lead Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) out in
