Sanjay Manjrekar has hit out at the BCCI selection panel, questioning why Rohit Sharma has been named in India\u2019s ODI squad for an upcoming three-match series against Afghanistan while Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan have been left out. The ex-India batter argued that the Ajit Agarkar-led group appears to be overlooking the long-term needs of Indian cricket, despite younger options being ready to step forward.<\/p>\n

Manjrekar\u2019s concerns over the ODI picks<\/h2>\n

  1. Manjrekar said Jaiswal has already done enough to secure his place in India\u2019s ODI set-up, pointing to his unbeaten 116 in his most recent ODI appearance against South Africa in Vizag last December.<\/li>\n
  2. He highlighted Sudharsan\u2019s early ODI impact, noting that the batter has recorded three fifties in just four innings for India.<\/li>\n
  3. Manjrekar questioned the reasoning behind leaving these performers out, while instead selecting a senior player whose fitness is considered uncertain and whose current form is not convincing.<\/li>\n
  4. He added that if Rohit is being retained despite doubts around form and availability, then selectors should clearly explain the decision to Jaiswal, arguing the young batter deserves a response.<\/li>\n
  5. Manjrekar suggested that, in such a scenario, the responsible step would be for the selectors to contact Jaiswal directly and apologise, citing his achievements at the highest level, including his Test pedigree, and stressing that the 24-year-old is still in his prime with a long future ahead.<\/li>\n
  6. He said the same argument applies to Sudharsan as well, and grouped players such as Gill, Sudharsan and Jaiswal as natural candidates for India\u2019s top order in ODI cricket.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Manjrekar also underlined that Jaiswal has played only four ODIs for India so far, yet has amassed 171 runs while maintaining solid showings across formats. In his view, Rohit Sharma, who is approaching 39 and has already featured in three ODI World Cups, should no longer be the automatic choice\u2014especially with India needing to build a squad for the 2027 50-over World Cup.<\/p>\n

    While Manjrekar acknowledged that Virat Kohli can still justify his selection because of his current form and fitness, he argued that the same justification cannot be extended to Rohit at this stage. He insisted that selectors should not rely on reputation or past laurels, but instead prioritise what strengthens Indian cricket over the long run.<\/p>\n

    \u201cEverybody knows what the right thing to do is. When you look at numbers and try to justify the selection, that\u2019s not really the job. The job is to do what\u2019s best for Indian cricket going forward,\u201d Manjrekar said, before posing a key question: whether Rohit Sharma should be treated as a mainstay for the next ODI World Cup campaign, or whether that opportunity should be given now to Jaiswal or Sudharsan.<\/p>\n

    He further noted that the players being discussed have already taken part in multiple World Cups, whereas India\u2019s last ODI World Cup title came in 2011. From his perspective, the team must move forward and make room for the next generation\u2014while also remembering that selection decisions affect not only the established names, but the broader group of players competing for opportunities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
