In IPL 2026, the batter amassed 776 runs across 16 innings to finish with the Orange Cap, striking at 237.31. He powered the season with one hundred and five half-centuries, turning every batting outing into a statement.<\/p>\n<p>With his performances defying expectations\u2014especially given that he is just 15\u2014fresh calls for a rapid India debut have only grown louder. Yet one prominent former India batter, Ambati Rayudu, views the composition of India\u2019s next T20 opening unit through a different lens.<\/p>\n<h2>Rayudu\u2019s preferred India opening pair for 2028<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Rayudu did not name Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, or Sooryavanshi when discussing his ideal T20 World Cup 2028 opening combination.<\/li>\n<li>Instead, he backed the Gujarat Titans duo of Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan as the most natural fit for the role.<\/li>\n<li>Rayudu pointed to how the pair have already defined the season\u2019s top-end productivity, adding 885 runs together as IPL 2026\u2019s most productive opening partnership.<\/li>\n<li>He noted the duo are 54 runs short of breaking the all-time IPL record for the most runs by an opening pair in a season, a mark currently held by Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers (939 runs for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2016).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For Rayudu, the case for Gill and Sudharsan extended beyond domestic numbers. With the next T20 World Cup set to take place in Australia and New Zealand, he believes the duo\u2019s style is better suited to the conditions likely to be encountered there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we are witnessing a pair that might travel to Australia and tackle the conditions there. The wicket was very similar in pace and bounce. And the ease with which these two are batting\u2026 I\u2019ll be surprised if both of them don\u2019t go there,\u201d Rayudu said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the most important factor is how well the two batters complement one another. \u201cIf conditions suit them, if you take a Gill, you would like to take Sudharsan as well, because they both complement each other beautifully. You are seeing it in the partnership; they both know each other\u2019s game very well. It\u2019s a great add-on if you want them to excel in different conditions,\u201d Rayudu explained.<\/p>\n<h3>Where Gill and Sudharsan stand in the Orange Cap race<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Gill is currently second in the Orange Cap standings with 722 runs from 15 matches.<\/li>\n<li>Sudharsan follows close behind with 710 runs from 16 innings.<\/li>\n<li>Together, they have built the most dominant opening partnership of the tournament.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Rayudu also acknowledged that other openers can be effective, but maintained that suitability matters most when the conditions change. \u201cI am not saying others are not good\u2026 It just might be that they both might be more suitable than the others,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h2>Debate over IPL impact versus international selection<\/h2>\n<p>The conversation then broadened to India\u2019s exceptional batting depth, with former Australia player Tom Moody joking that India could even field two teams for the tournament. Aaron Finch, the former World Cup-winning captain, agreed that the resources available to Indian cricket are causing genuine embarrassment of riches.<\/p>\n<p>Moody, however, urged caution against thinking the IPL alone is enough to map the path to international success. \u201cThe depth they have got is just phenomenal. But again, you are looking at the micro space of IPL; you need to look at the bigger picture. We all get carried away with what happens in IPL. But international cricket is on a different level again,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He underlined that international cricket has repeatedly shaped selection decisions across formats. \u201cWe have seen it dictate selection in all forms of the game, haven\u2019t we? Have a good IPL and that can get you selected in the Test team,\u201d Moody added.<\/p>\n<p>Moody clarified that while IPL performances can reveal and reward talent, they should not automatically translate into immediate national selection. \u201cThat\u2019s my point. You identify the talent. It should not force you to pick that talent then. I think a bigger story needs to be had to qualify for a position,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In short, Moody\u2019s argument was that IPL success should identify players\u2014but not automatically elevate them.
