India wicketkeeper-batter KS Bharat has announced his retirement from international cricket, marking the conclusion of a journey that carried him into the Test arena on seven occasions. The 32-year-old shared the decision through an emotional Instagram message, looking back on the pride of representing India and thanking the people who supported him through years of hard work.<\/p>\n

International career and the road to retirement<\/h2>\n

  1. Bharat, a wicketkeeper-batter by trade, informed fans of his retirement on Thursday via a heartfelt post on Instagram.<\/li>\n
  2. His international stint included appearances in seven Test matches, during which he represented India at the highest level.<\/li>\n
  3. He was named in India\u2019s set-up for the 2023 World Test Championship final, a major milestone in his career.<\/li>\n
  4. Despite opportunities, he could not secure a long-term, fixed spot in the Test side, as India continued to evaluate different options behind the stumps.<\/li>\n
  5. His most recent appearance for India came against England in Visakhapatnam in February 2024, after which he fell further down the pecking order as the team explored alternatives.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    While Bharat\u2019s work with the gloves frequently earned praise, his batting returns were a recurring talking point during his time in international cricket. Across seven Tests, he scored 221 runs at an average of 20.09, and he did not reach a half-century. Behind the stumps, he completed 18 catches and made one stumping, closing his international chapter with a reputation as a dependable wicketkeeper.<\/p>\n

    In his retirement note, Bharat wrote: \u201cWith a proud heart and sense of gratitude, I announce my retirement from international Cricket. To play for my country has been the greatest honour of my life. This journey of mine has demanded great resilience and strength but the Honour to represent India in Tests worth every moment. In a family of four, we all lived the same dream over two decades, a big heart to my sister, mom and dad for creating an environment and support system they have been. I am a product of their love, discipline and hard work.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Domestic record and support system<\/h2>\n

    Bharat has enjoyed a strong first-class career as well, featuring in 116 matches and accumulating 6,102 runs. That domestic body of work includes a triple century, with his personal best score of 308.<\/p>\n

    Importantly, his retirement announcement was limited to international cricket; he did not indicate any intention to stop playing domestic matches. In the same message, he also expressed appreciation to the Andhra Cricket Association and the Visakhapatnam District Cricket Association (VDCA) for their backing throughout his development.<\/p>\n

    He added: \u201cThank you, BCCI and all the coaches and managers who I came across in my career and who supported me unconditionally by creating a great environment to play and excel at the highest level. Thank you Andhra Cricket Association, VDCA and all office bearers for your support and encouragement from my childhood. I owe massive gratitude and respects to all the Groundsmen who have worked very, very hard to ensure the best pitches and ground conditions were given to me at all times. To all my teammates I extend a big thank you for all the moments and achievements together, which helped me in my career and without you all it was not quite possible for me to achieve my dream and play the sport all these years.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Tributes to Kohli, Rohit and Dravid<\/h2>\n

    Bharat also used his farewell post to thank key figures from both his franchise and international pathways. He credited Virat Kohli with giving him his IPL debut opportunity with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and he acknowledged Rohit Sharma for captaining India around the time of his Test debut. He further thanked former head coach Rahul Dravid for the guidance he received throughout his international journey.<\/p>\n

    \u201cA big thank you to my IPL debut captain Virat Kohli for giving me an opportunity to show my skill and come into recognition. A big thank you to my Indian captain Rohit Sharma under whom I made my Test debut which is priceless and beyond words.
