In the middle of this debate, former BCCI chief selector Saba Karim has added another contender to the discussion\u2014Rajat Patidar.<\/p>\n
Karim argued that Patidar\u2019s captaincy credentials in the IPL make him a serious name to consider, especially given what consecutive title-winning leadership demands at the highest level. He pointed out that Patidar, as the Royal Challengers Bengaluru captain, guided the franchise to a second straight IPL title, placing him in the same elite bracket as captains such as MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma who have managed to achieve back-to-back triumphs.<\/p>\n
Even though Patidar has not yet made his T20I debut for India, Karim believes his performances and leadership in the IPL have brought him into the spotlight. He highlighted that the middle-order batter enjoyed a strong season and showed composure in high-pressure moments, which earned praise for both his tactical approach and his ability to manage a team featuring varied roles and personalities. With India weighing long-term leadership possibilities, Karim suggested Patidar\u2019s rapid rise makes him a compelling candidate for a bigger national responsibility.<\/p>\n
While Karim backed Patidar as a candidate, he also spoke about the wider captaincy landscape and listed several players he believes could be in the mix if India decides to bring in a new T20I leader. Although Shreyas Iyer remains one of the leading contenders in the conversation, Karim expanded the shortlist to include Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan as well.<\/p>\n
Karim also addressed another major name\u2014Hardik Pandya\u2014making it clear that he does not believe selectors would look toward him for the next T20I captaincy cycle. He said the selectors have raised concerns about Hardik\u2019s leadership qualities, pointing to the scrutiny that emerged around his captaincy during the previous season.<\/p>\n
Karim explained that even though Mumbai Indians managed to qualify for the playoffs, there were doubts regarding the style of Hardik\u2019s leadership. He added that, in his view, Hardik would not be able to justify a position as captain of the Indian side even on current form.<\/p>\n
