After spending nearly 30 months outside India\u2019s T20I plans, Iyer has clawed his way back into the selectors\u2019 thinking, forcing both team management and the BCCI to take a serious look at his credentials. IPL form has been central to that push: not only as a batter, but also as a captain whose stock has risen steadily with Punjab Kings.<\/p>\n
Iyer\u2019s batting case has been built on volume and consistency. He scored more than 600 runs last season, and this year has been close to 500, numbers that have helped him emerge as one of the most dependable top-order options. Just as important is the manner in which he has handled leadership responsibilities. With Punjab Kings, Iyer has earned widespread credit for energising a young side and providing structure in high-pressure situations. Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting has repeatedly highlighted Iyer\u2019s captaincy traits and even pointed to the likelihood that he would ultimately wear India\u2019s T20I armband.<\/p>\n
That leadership reputation has also been backed by longevity in the IPL. Iyer has recently joined an elite list of captains who have already led their franchises in more than 100 matches in the tournament, reinforcing the argument that he has the experience to manage a national side as well.<\/p>\n
As Iyer\u2019s name gathered momentum, attention also turned to his relationship with India head coach Gautam Gambhir, with whom he shared a successful professional chapter at Kolkata Knight Riders. While the rapport is described as more work-focused than personally close, it is understood Gambhir has welcomed the prospect of working with Iyer. \u201cHe has no issues,\u201d is how one view of the situation has been put.<\/p>\n
If the captaincy change is confirmed, Iyer\u2019s responsibilities would arrive quickly and with major events on the horizon\u2014most notably the next T20 World Cup, and, potentially even more significantly, the Los Angeles Games in 2028. In that scenario, Iyer would replace Suryakumar Yadav, who appears to have lost momentum in the race to continue as India\u2019s T20I captain.<\/p>\n
Suryakumar\u2019s struggles have been visible in both international and domestic cricket. He has found it hard to score consistently since the T20 World Cup, and his dismissal for five in the T20 Mumbai League on Thursday was the latest sign of a long slump. In the IPL, too, his batting impact has been limited despite a couple of half-centuries.<\/p>\n
While Pandya\u2019s situation has a defined pathway, there has been no immediate update on Rohit Sharma, who was also picked conditionally for the Afghanistan series. Rohit has not yet reported to the BCCI\u2019s Centre of Excellence, though those close to him in the Mumbai Cricket Association believe he should be fit in time for the ODIs.<\/p>\n
Rohit, who now plays only ODIs for India, suffered a hamstring injury during the IPL. That problem caused him to miss five matches for Mumbai Indians.<\/p>\n
