From 62\/2, they collapsed to 95 all out, and the aftermath reflected what would become a recurring theme\u2014starts that do not fully translate into controlling totals and match-winning finishes.<\/p>\n<h3>Middle-overs problem becomes the headline<\/h3>\n<p>Those results, combined with three defeats in the ongoing 2026 campaign up to now, have sharpened attention on one persistent weakness: the inability to squeeze maximum value out of the middle overs, even after a flying start. That finish, though, also served as a reminder that the innings could have been shaped more decisively earlier, rather than relying on the final push.<\/p>\n<p>When the batting splits are examined deeper for IPL 2026, KKR\u2019s position is mixed: they rank eighth in run rates and in average runs scored per dismissal. Over time, the contrast is stark. In 2024, KKR topped five key parameters among the league\u2019s ten sides, but in 2025 they were the worst on all of them\u2014an indicator of how sharply their tempo shifted from season to season.<\/p>\n<p>KKR\u2019s strongest 2024 phase was built on Phil Salt and Sunil Narine at the top, with the pair combining for more than 311 runs and a combined strike rate of 184 during the middle-phase when KKR batted deep. Yet the middle-overs identity in overs 7\u201315 belonged to Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer: Shreyas struck for 220 runs at a strike rate of 140.12, while Venkatesh added 199 runs at 142.14. Notably, Shreyas was dismissed only once in that segment, illustrating how cleanly they converted that window into platform-building.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, poor output from the opening group did not help, and Rahane\u2014who has been central to KKR\u2019s batting spine since\u2014has not consistently cracked the middle-overs formula. Since 2023, Rahane has averaged 72.87 while striking at 167.52 in the first six overs, but the figures drop to an average of 16.6 and a strike rate of 125.33 in the middle-phase. His strike-rate against spin sits at 121.95 compared to 171.17 versus pace, compounding the same difficulty as the innings moves beyond the early overs.<\/p>\n<p>Rinku Singh faces a similar split in the same period. His strike rate comes to 167.42 against pace, but falls to 125.09 versus spin. Powell\u2019s matchups also underline how targeted plans can force setbacks: he has been dismissed five times in 57 balls against right-arm leg-spin in the IPL, striking at 92.98, a kind of matchup that often gets exploited in T20 cricket.<\/p>\n<h3>LSG\u2019s struggles in the same overs add context<\/h3>\n<p>There is a twist to the story for Thursday\u2019s contest. After the first 15 matches of the tournament, LSG\u2014KKR\u2019s opponents\u2014have been the weakest side across every listed parameter in overs 7\u201315. KKR\u2019s fast bowling played a decisive role in the early portion, sending back LSG\u2019s key quartet\u2014Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, Rishabh Pant, and Nicholas Pooran\u2014by the 12th over.<\/p>\n<p>Ayush Badoni\u2019s dismissal in the 15th over nearly ended the contest for LSG, threatening to seal the outcome when the batting lineup still looked, on paper, heavily loaded. But then a young hand, Mukul Choudhary, stepped into the centre of events and changed the trajectory.
