Ravi Bishnoi\u2019s bowling feels like a sequence of moments rather than a single delivery. He builds up with a quick, intricate approach, then comes the front-on action where the ball comes out flat and straight, probing with the kind of googly that tempts batters to try their luck. If the batter misses\u2014if the plan works\u2014Bishnoi is already waiting at his assigned position in the middle, arms thrown wide in a celebratory \u201cStarman\u201d pose as he looks skyward, before turning back to beam at his teammates.<\/p>\n
This season, there has been plenty to celebrate. Bishnoi has emerged among the leading wicket-takers in the IPL, claiming nine wickets across four matches, and he has already matched the total he managed last year. That earlier return was his least productive IPL campaign to date. It took him 11 games to reach the same number, during which Lucknow Super Giants had him bowling with an economy of 10.83 and an average of 44.55\u2014figures that ultimately saw him let go. Around that same period, he also slipped out of the India T20I plans.<\/p>\n
His fall from the international setup had more than one cause. One factor was the sheer impact of Varun Chakravarthy, the \u201cmystery spinner,\u201d whose performances made it difficult for selectors to overlook him. And then came the rest of the story\u2014his own issues and the broader selection picture.<\/p>\n
Bishnoi\u2019s turnaround for Rajasthan Royals\u2014where those nine wickets have arrived at an economy rate of 8.76 and an average of 12.66\u2014can be traced back to a clear understanding of what went wrong in his previous stint. After his four-wicket haul against Gujarat Titans last week, he explained the problem plainly: \u201cI had one weakness: if my length was wrong then I was getting hit for fours and sixes.\u201d When the line or length strayed, the damage wasn\u2019t minor\u2014it was immediate and punishing.<\/p>\n
The statistics back up that self-assessment. In the last IPL season, he bowled full roughly 35% of the time, and more often than not it was too full. Put simply, he was landing a slot ball\u2014at least twice in an over. Those deliveries came with an economy of 12.97. While Bishnoi\u2019s legspin has always carried a distinctive advantage, especially in taking the ball away from the hitting zones of left-handed batters more than right-handers, his length errors gave opponents a pattern to attack. Batters were willing to let the occasional good ball go, then jump on the ones that sat in the wrong place. There were enough of those opportunities to hurt him.<\/p>\n
When he attacked the stumps on a good length during IPL 2025\u2014about 17% of his deliveries\u2014the gap became obvious. Those particular balls returned a more Bishnoi-like average of 23.00 and an economy of 7.46. Even then, they weren\u2019t quite at the level you\u2019d want if you\u2019re chasing dominance as a wicket-taking specialist. In T20 cricket, you can tolerate runs conceded as long as wickets keep falling. But when the runs pile up, it naturally reduces the chances that the bowler gets to deliver the exact wicket-targeting ball at the right time\u2014and it also lowers the likelihood of forcing false shots when, eventually, a rare good delivery appears.<\/p>\n
With that clarity, Bishnoi worked on the fix away from the spotlight. \u201cI played a whole season of domestic cricket and worked on perfecting my lengths,\u201d he said. \u201cHitting my lengths [has] made it difficult for batters.\u201d<\/p>\n
That work is visible in this season\u2019s figures. He has sent it full only 25.64% of the time, a noticeable drop from last year. The result is that when he does land on a good length and attack the stumps\u2014around 28% of the time\u2014his economy rate drops to 4.24. That is more than three runs per over lower than last season, though the comparison comes with the caveat of a smaller number of matches this time.<\/p>\n
There are still plenty of good balls in his spell. The key change is that the bad ones have been reduced.<\/p>\n
Even so, Bishnoi has never been the kind of bowler who \u201cconstructs\u201d visually beautiful spells. He is a white-ball specialist\u2014more like Erling Haaland than Lionel Messi in the way he converts opportunities than in the way he dazzles with artistry. Yet there is still a craft in his bowling that often gets lost once the game is compressed into highlights. On screen, you mainly see him spinning the ball away from left-handed batters, drawing them into reaching before the ball turns into a catch for the fielders at cover. Or you see a batter swing across the line and get caught at deep midwicket. It is easy, from those moments alone, to assume the most memorable wickets come from the most aesthetic sources: bat-and-pad appeals, or the ball slipping past the outside edge as the batter is out of his crease. For Bishnoi, the celebration itself\u2014the arms spread wide\u2014can become the lasting image.<\/p>\n
But if you ask Bishnoi, he understands that the wicket ball almost never arrives in isolation. It is delivered after a steady stream of good deliveries\u2014ones that keep batters quiet for long enough to tempt them into attacking only when the pressure feels manageable. That ability is what propelled him to the No. 1 position in the ICC T20I bowling rankings nearly three years ago. Now, he is trying to make sure the bad habits that once cost him are pushed out, creating space for even better ones.<\/p>\n
