The action follows a confrontation with the umpires that the match referee deemed a breach of the league\u2019s on-field conduct rules, resulting in a cut to his earnings and an additional disciplinary record point.<\/p>\n<h3>Quick facts<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Tim David (RCB) was fined for not following umpire instructions during the IPL 2026 match vs Mumbai Indians on April 12.<\/li>\n<li>David\u2019s fine amounts to 25% of his match fee.<\/li>\n<li>He also received one demerit point for the offence.<\/li>\n<li>The incident occurred during RCB\u2019s innings at the Wankhede Stadium in the 18th over.<\/li>\n<li>Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya was also fined for a slow over-rate (INR 12 lakh, first offence of the season).<\/li>\n<li>No disciplinary action was reported against RCB captain Rajat Patidar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The 30-year-old right-handed batter was found guilty of violating Article 2.4 of the IPL Code of Conduct. That clause specifically covers \u201cdisobeying an umpire\u2019s instruction during a match,\u201d and the officials\u2019 report led to the disciplinary outcome.<\/p>\n<p>David was penalised at Level 1 of the Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials. He accepted the Match Referee\u2019s sanction and admitted to the charge, confirming the fine and the single demerit point.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya was fined separately for slow over-rate management. Since it was Mumbai\u2019s first such offence of the IPL 2026 season, the punishment was INR 12 lakhs rather than a harsher escalation, as per the match regulations.<\/p>\n<p>The match itself lasted 4 hours and 22 minutes, becoming the longest game of IPL 2026. Despite the fine for their captain, Mumbai fell short in the contest, while RCB\u2019s skipper Rajat Patidar did not face any action.<\/p>\n<h3>David\u2019s ball-change flare-up<\/h3>\n<p>During RCB\u2019s batting innings, David became involved in a dispute with the on-field umpires\u2014Virender Sharma and Swaroopanand Kannur. The flashpoint came in the 18th over, immediately after David struck a six off Mumbai captain Hardik Pandya.<\/p>\n<p>The distance of the hit forced the match officials to request a change of ball. Once a new ball was introduced and the umpires began narrowing down which one to use, David started playing with the replacement, visibly treating the process as a game rather than complying with the instructions.<\/p>\n<p>After the officials asked him to hand over the ball, he did not immediately do so and continued to toy with it. The situation escalated further, and David only returned the ball after Virender Sharma issued a firm warning to the big-hitting Australian.<\/p>\n<p>The episode drew sharp criticism, with several pundits questioning David\u2019s decision-making and conduct during a match moment that required direct compliance with umpiring instructions.<\/p>\n<h3>What happened in MI vs RCB<\/h3>\n<p>On the field, RCB secured a win by 18 runs. Hardik won the toss and chose to field first, but RCB built momentum early and finished their innings on 240 for 4.<\/p>\n<p>Half-centuries played a key role, with contributions from Virat Kohli, Phil Salt, and Rajat Patidar. Tim David added quick finishing value as well, remaining unbeaten on 34 off 16 deliveries.<\/p>\n<p>Mumbai Indians, however, could not chase the target down and were restricted to 222. Sherfane Rutherford top-scored for the five-time champions with an unbeaten 71, but the total still proved beyond Mumbai\u2019s reach.<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, RCB are set to face Lucknow Super Giants on Wednesday.
