The call came after years of fitness trouble that repeatedly disrupted his ability to compete at the highest level. From December 2023 to May 2024, he played only 10 matches of top-tier cricket, with a shin splints problem that had first surfaced in 2021 continuing to flare up despite consistent rehab across multiple centres. That long-running struggle ultimately shaped how he approached his career—first by understanding what his body needed, then by rebuilding his game around it.

Key takeaways

Between December 2023 and May 2024, Kartik Tyagi managed just 10 matches at the top level.

His shin splints issue began in 2021 and limited his IPL involvement to only six appearances across the 2022 to 2024 seasons.

Before the 2024 IPL, he planned to treat the shin condition after the tournament, but a side strain meant he played a single match for Gujarat Titans—returning 0/51 versus Chennai Super Kings.

From May 2024 onward, it took 19 months for him to return to top-level cricket.

After working with Ashish Kaushik, Tyagi shortened his run-up and refined key load-up mechanics to improve efficiency and reduce stress on his body.

His comeback included an 18-wicket haul for Meerut Mavericks in the UP T20 League 2025, followed by a call-up to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy where he was used against Chandigarh.

The injury, the pause, and the push to fix the root cause

Tyagi’s own reflection on the problem was straightforward: he could not reliably handle the intensity of “big matches” or carry enough overs during practice. He also described the difficulty spreading into longer formats, noting that it became especially challenging in 50-over and first-class cricket. The pattern was clear—rehabilitation helped temporarily, but the condition kept returning.

Heading into the 2024 season, Tyagi decided he would focus on proper treatment once the IPL ended. Instead, he picked up an additional side strain during the tournament window. In one appearance for Gujarat Titans, he went wicketless and conceded 51 runs against Chennai Super Kings. That experience convinced him further that the priority had to be full, proper treatment rather than trying to manage the issue piecemeal.

So the competitive pause began in May 2024. After that point, Tyagi did not play another top-level game for 19 months. He linked up with Ashish Kaushik—who had previously served as Head Physiotherapist at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, now the Centre of Excellence. Tyagi and Kaushik already knew each other from Tyagi’s U19 days, which helped the process feel continuous rather than starting from scratch.

Kaushik’s work centred on the practical details of Tyagi’s delivery mechanics: the length of his approach run, the angles he created, and restoring efficiency through those movements. Tyagi has previously altered his bowling action, and the motivation each time has been body management. This time, Kaushik highlighted two specific technical concerns: an excessive out-jump during the load-up and the position and movement of Tyagi’s non-bowling arm as it moved away during his delivery sequence.

There was also a deeper explanation behind the injury cycle. Kaushik framed stress-related issues in a way that was simple but revealing—injuries can occur when an athlete is doing more than the body can handle. The “why” mattered just as much as the “what,” and the answer pointed towards Tyagi’s run-up length and how he was running during his approach. Once the recurrence became evident, Tyagi committed to shortening his run-up. Kaushik described the shift with confidence, suggesting the process was finally landing the way it needed to.

For a pacer who naturally clocks speeds in excess of 145 kph, shortening the run-up raised an obvious question—would it affect pace? Kaushik argued it would not in a harmful way, pointing out that Tyagi was effectively preparing for high speed several steps before reaching the crease. Those extra steps were not simply wasted; they also created fatigue over time and increased injury risk. With the adjustment, Tyagi could be ready at the right moment, without paying a physical price for arriving “too early” in his run.

Rebuilding confidence, returning to wickets, and refining the pace plan

Tyagi admitted that being sidelined for a long time tested him mentally. He credited his family and Kaushik for keeping him grounded, but he also said his own mindset was the biggest driver in getting through the break. He recalled a belief in patience, describing the idea that if he was unfit, fitness would eventually follow.

Six months into the structured work under Kaushik, Tyagi began to get back into competitive shape. His first step into live cricket came in the UP T20 League 2025, where he produced an 18-wicket season for Meerut Mavericks. Even while returning, he continued to bowl the difficult overs and remained among the fastest bowlers in the competition.

That form earned him a recall to the Uttar Pradesh squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He sat out the first four matches, then was drafted in for a fixture against Chandigarh. Tyagi dismissed Manan Vohra, who had made 61, and finished with figures of 1/33 off four overs—an impact return that underlined the readiness he had been building.

There was also a symbolic timing to his comeback: it came at Eden Gardens, 12 days before Kolkata Knight Riders used the player auction in Abu Dhabi to bring him into their plans. With the remodeled action, Tyagi needed about six months to get back to his usual high speeds. Kaushik’s approach emphasised work frequency and consistency, and Tyagi’s explanation focused on how muscle memory and rhythm started to take over once he was bowling more.

Tyagi described the mental shift too. Rather than constantly calculating how quickly he needs to bowl, he said the speed now blends naturally into his action. He added that keeping the right workload at a proper frequency is key to making the process sustainable.

In addition to his pace, Tyagi began using a newly developed slower ball more often. That change showed up in match action as well—he was credited with dismissing Nicholas Pooran in KKR’s most recent game against Lucknow Super Giants. Still, pace remains his defining strength, and it is the quality that earlier earned him a role as a net bowler for India during the 2020–21 tour in Australia, during the Covid-era setup.

That tour carried a heavy injury toll, and it meant other net bowlers—T Natarajan and Washington Sundar—were eventually handed Test caps. Tyagi suggested that he may not have been far from similar circumstances, even while recognising that in hindsight, staying off the field might have helped him. He joked that his own shin splints began from that very tour environment, adding that many net bowlers who went there returned with injuries. He said he was hoping his own body would avoid the problem, and he reflected that if he had played, he might have faced even greater issues.

To date, Tyagi has played only four first-class matches. The most recent appearance came during the second phase of the last Ranji Trophy season. His ability to bowl 27 overs across two innings without discomfort served as a significant early sign that the sport had welcomed him back properly. At 25, the optimism of a fast bowler who has missed plenty of cricket is now visible, and it also helps explain the composure he shows at the death when games tighten.

Tyagi’s pressure-handling has been noted before. In IPL 2021, he is remembered for a four-run defence for Rajasthan Royals against Punjab Kings. Just as importantly, he said the weight of attention that comes with being a young, talented U19 graduate has never overwhelmed him in the way it can for others.

Learning under pressure and earning a starting place

Tyagi compared pressure at elite level to something that exists, but is not necessarily crippling. He acknowledged that once you reach a high stage, the world watches and the stakes increase. However, he argued that the mark of a major player is the ability to do things normally even with that spotlight on. He also said he has learned not to get stuck in second-guessing during matches.

He referenced lessons he has taken from the clarity and execution shown by bowlers such as Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah. Tyagi explained how his thinking has evolved: earlier in his career, he would replay every over and ball he believed he “shouldn’t have” bowled. Now he accepts that sometimes a good ball still doesn’t lead to the desired outcome, while sometimes a ball that isn’t perfect can still work in your favour. He tries not to obsess over the result and focuses instead on the best option for the moment.

His in-game approach includes a specific damage-limiting plan. If his first two overs don’t go well, he aims to reduce the damage as much as possible in the next two overs. That short-term mindset has helped him both in cricket situations and in life during recovery—moving away from dwelling on what might have been and concentrating on what can be improved next.

Off the field, Tyagi’s earlier chapters were defined by injury-heavy circumstances, including spells at Sunrisers and Titans where he had to spend too much time away from action. Now, similar injury-heavy realities elsewhere have turned into an opportunity for him. After an impressive run in KKR’s pre-season intra-squad games—highlighted by a three-wicket burst where he pushed his teammates for pace—Tyagi earned a place in the franchise’s starting XI.

Higher honours remain in his sights. Tyagi believes a strong IPL season could push him back onto the radar of selectors, but he also recognises that selection is outside his control. For someone who chose to forgo a key portion of his early years in the sport, he said patience is not just a virtue—it is something he has lived by. He closed with a philosophy in his own words: whatever has to happen will happen.

In the summer of 2024, Kartik Tyagi made the kind of decision
