In sport, the replacement who comes under pressure is often treated like a disappointment, while the person who was left out is suddenly viewed as the obvious cure. But in reality, team problems rarely have a single cause\u2014and the noise around a star name frequently drowns out the reasoning that led to the choice in the first place.<\/p>\n

That backdrop is shaping the conversation around Cameron Green at Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2026. After five matches, KKR are yet to win. They do have one point, earned when rain washed out their home game versus Punjab Kings. Outside that abandoned contest, the picture has been bleak, with their most recent outing against Lucknow Super Giants at Eden Gardens ending in heartbreak, decided on the final ball. Apart from that narrow escape into the last over, KKR have looked distant from the team fans remember from earlier seasons.<\/p>\n

KKR\u2019s struggles are not tied to one individual, yet the spotlight always finds the biggest contract in the playing XI. Green carries the burden of being Cameron Green, and five games into the campaign he has become the centre of attention for KKR\u2019s scrutiny, drawing fresh criticism from supporters and commentators alike.<\/p>\n

Cameron Green\u2019s IPL 2026 spotlight<\/h2>\n

  2. They pushed Lucknow Super Giants at Eden Gardens last week but fell just short on the last ball, reinforcing a wider pattern of inconsistency.<\/li>\n
  3. Green, the highest-priced acquisition in KKR\u2019s XI, has drawn mounting criticism as his performances have not matched the expectations attached to his fee.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Green arrived for IPL 2026 as the most expensive overseas player signed in auction history, costing Kolkata INR 25.20 crore. For a franchise that finished eighth in 2025\u2014one year after celebrating its third IPL title\u2014KKR approached the auction with a reset mindset. They entered with the biggest purse in the market, spending a total of INR 64.30 crore, with major allocations going to Green (INR 25.20 crore), Matheesha Pathirana (INR 18 crore) and Mustafizur Rahman (INR 9.2 crore).<\/p>\n

    However, misfortune has disrupted the plan. Pathirana has been sidelined by injury, while Mustafizur was released in line with a BCCI directive amid geopolitical tensions. With those pieces removed, the attention has naturally concentrated further on Green.<\/p>\n

    Expectations were always high for the Australian, including the belief that he could become a long-term replacement for Andre Russell. Yet once the tournament began, Green struggled to deliver consistently. He did not bowl in the first three matches due to injury management, a decision that drew criticism from those who wanted a clearer rhythm. When he returned, his impact with the ball did not improve much, as he managed only one wicket across two games.<\/p>\n

    His batting figures have also underlined the same challenge. In five matches, Green\u2019s scores read 18, 4, 2, 32* and 0.<\/p>\n

    Whether it is the pressure that comes with a record price tag or simply a rough stretch in form, Green has not looked like himself since the Australian summer. In the Ashes, a T20I series in Pakistan and the T20 World Cup, he did not register a single fifty. That drought ended only when he scored a Sheffield Shield century for Western Australia ahead of IPL 2026.<\/p>\n

    Why did Green cost INR 25.20 crore?<\/h2>\n

    Green\u2019s price was not built on reputation alone. As a fast-bowling all-rounder, he fits a rare profile\u2014one that is in short supply around world cricket. More importantly, his previous IPL seasons showed he could influence matches both ways.<\/p>\n

    In 2023, Green scored 452 runs at a strike rate of 160.28 for Mumbai Indians. His output included a 47-ball century, and he also took six wickets in the same season. After being traded to Royal Challengers Bengaluru for the next campaign, he added 255 runs at 143.25 and took ten wickets. He did miss the following season due to a back injury.<\/p>\n

    Was the Russell-Green swap a mistake?<\/h2>\n

    The debate about whether KKR made the wrong replacement is not new. Tim David faced a similar narrative when he was viewed as the successor to Kieron Pollard at Mumbai Indians. Replacing a T20 great is rarely straightforward, and Green\u2019s situation has followed that pattern.<\/p>\n

    Even if his form has been below par, switching back to Russell is not automatically the fix. Russell was central to KKR\u2019s title wins in 2014 and 2024, and he remains one of the franchise\u2019s most influential players. But KKR opted not to retain him after a difficult 2025 season, when he scored 167 runs in 13 matches at an average of 18.56 and took eight wickets.<\/p>\n

    Russell has since moved into a \u201cPower Coach\u201d role at KKR, even while staying an active cricketer. Over the past 12 months away from IPL action, he has also not been at his best. Russell has scored 461 runs at 21.95 in 39 matches and picked up 34 wickets. In ILT20 and SA20 combined, he produced just 34 runs and one wicket across six matches.<\/p>\n

    What next for KKR\u2019s Green conundrum?<\/h2>\n

    A possible reshuffle has entered the conversation. Former Australia captain Aaron Finch questioned KKR\u2019s plan to use Green at No. 6 against Chennai Super Kings, a batting position that is not familiar for him. Finch also pointed to Green being deployed in the powerplay, noting that it is an unusual usage given how teams typically rely on him.<\/p>\n

    Finch suggested that KKR could look at Tim Seifert as an alternative. He argued that Seifert offers a specialist opener in strong form, coming off a T20 World Cup, and brings a different range of batting options. Finch added that there comes a stage where a side has to acknowledge that something \u201chasn\u2019t worked yet,\u201d and while it does not necessarily mean the end of the experiment, it may be the right time to adjust the balance and reconsider the structure.<\/p>\n
