Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene faced pointed questions at a press conference after the franchise suffered a fourth straight defeat in IPL 2026. Punjab Kings, riding high, outplayed MI in every department\u2014batting, bowling, fielding and leadership\u2014and Jayawardene had to address the mounting pressure around the team\u2019s rocky campaign, including the criticism aimed at captain Hardik Pandya following a disastrous start to the season.<\/p>\n

  1. When asked about the \u201ccrisis\u201d surrounding the squad and the scrutiny on Hardik Pandya, Jayawardene rejected the idea that the blame should fall on one individual.<\/li>\n
  2. He said the shortcomings are shared across the group, insisting that when the team isn\u2019t performing, the responsibility extends to everyone involved\u2014players and the management alike.<\/li>\n
  3. Jayawardene added that while MI are still putting together stretches of good cricket, rival teams have been far more clinical and have capitalised on key moments more consistently.<\/li>\n
  4. He argued that the focus should be on controlling the phases that the team can influence, rather than fixating on a single name.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Jayawardene also highlighted that the early-season rhythm MI managed in the past has been missing recently, even though the franchise did open IPL 2026 with a win\u2014a result they have not been able to replicate in the most recent editions. In his view, a small run of victories in the upcoming fixtures could help restore confidence and stabilise performances.<\/p>\n

      Turning to the game against Punjab, Jayawardene explained that he had hoped MI would reach the 210\u2013220 run band, especially after Quinton de Kock provided a strong start. However, he said the innings lost momentum near the end, and that swing in the final phases proved costly.<\/p>\n
