Abhishek Sharma\u2019s blistering 15-ball fifty against CSK on Saturday, April 18, had suggested another big SRH total was brewing\u2014and for a brief spell, it looked that way. After five overs, the hosts had raced to 63 without loss, with the match-implied odds in their favour as the innings settled. Yet CSK, with key spells from Anshul Kamboj and Jamie Overton, clawed things back, and SRH eventually finished on 194 for 9. Even with a chase that began promisingly for CSK, the five-time champions once again proved unable to seal the deal, falling short by 10 runs as the pressure mounted in the final overs.<\/p>\n

SRH\u2019s start, CSK\u2019s fightback, and the chase that slipped away<\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. Abhishek Sharma\u2019s quickfire fifty (off just 15 balls) set the tone early for SRH on April 18.<\/li>\n
  2. SRH were 63\/0 at the end of five overs, and the win-probability indicator on Cricbuzz at that stage leaned strongly towards SRH at 70%.<\/li>\n
  3. Anshul Kamboj and Jamie Overton helped tighten the contest, restricting CSK\u2019s opponents to 194\/9 as SRH\u2019s innings concluded.<\/li>\n
  4. CSK started their reply with intent, reaching 110\/3 by the halfway point of the chase.<\/li>\n
  5. As the chase gained momentum, the win-probability swung in CSK\u2019s direction, reading 69% with CSK still in control.<\/li>\n
  6. But CSK were unable to close out from a winning position, and the final stage told the story: with 84 required from the last 10 overs, CSK managed only 30\/2 over the next five.<\/li>\n
  7. With 54 still needed off the last five, the target looked reachable on a batting-friendly surface, especially with Matthew Short and Shivam Dube set and Overton still to come.<\/li>\n
  8. Despite that, CSK fell short by 10 runs, bringing yet another disappointing end to a chase.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    After the match, Ishan Kishan acknowledged the margin directly, admitting CSK were \u201c30-40 runs short\u201d on the day\u2019s picture of the game. Still, the decisive factor was what happened in the bowling back end: CSK\u2019s bowlers and fielding unit were able to defend through a combination of experience and execution, with Nitish Kumar Reddy\u2019s all-round contribution playing a major role. Overall, the result extended CSK\u2019s troubling pattern in successful chases.<\/p>\n

    CSK\u2019s chase record since 2024 highlights the bigger problem<\/h2>\n

    The defeat was another chapter in CSK\u2019s difficult chase history. Since 2024, they have been the second-worst side in IPL run chases, with only MI recording a poorer record. The numbers become more alarming for high totals: in IPL matches where the target has been 175 or more, CSK have lost 16 of their 18 chases since 2020 \u2014 a period that includes their first season where they failed to qualify for the playoffs.<\/p>\n

    By contrast, in IPL 2018 and 2019, CSK\u2019s outcomes in chases of that magnitude were far more balanced, with five wins and one defeat. One of those defeats came in a chase of 198, where they lost by four runs, underscoring how close those contests once were compared to recent seasons.<\/p>\n

    There is also context for why batting second has often looked easier in certain years. IPL 2020 and the 2021 second leg in the UAE delivered some of the most favourable batting conditions for chasing, and the same trend was echoed at the T20 World Cup shortly after the 2021 edition. In that triumphant 2021 IPL campaign, the team won each of their six successful chases. Three of those chases involved targets in the 170\u2013175 range, with Ruturaj Gaikwad playing a prominent role\u2014earning Player of the Match honours twice and contributing a 74-run opening partnership with Faf du Plessis in the other.<\/p>\n

    The highest chase outcome in 2023 was 171, achieved in a 15-over shortened game in the final, which was completed off the last ball with 10 required off two. Earlier in that match, Gaikwad had already put on 74 in 6.3 overs with Devon Conway, setting up the finish.<\/p>\n

    CSK\u2019s captain\u2019s record while batting second has also had an obvious effect on results, which is highlighted by Gaikwad\u2019s trends in the IPL since 2022\u2014both overall and specifically in chases during that period.<\/p>\n

    Toss trends, league positioning, and what comes next for CSK<\/h2>\n

    With batting-friendly conditions shaping many games, captains who won the toss have chosen to bowl first in 24 of the 27 matches in IPL 2026 so far. CSK themselves won the toss twice and elected to field on both occasions\u2014against RCB and against SRH\u2014but those decisions ended in defeats, including the conceded 97 in the final five overs versus RCB.<\/p>\n

    Across the league stage so far, the chasing side has won 16 of the 26 completed games, suggesting that the margin for error is small once targets are within reach. At this stage of the season, CSK sit seventh in the points table, with three teams tied on six points above them\u2014including SRH, the opponent in this match.<\/p>\n

    For CSK, failing to close out another chase from a position of strength, in a game where momentum clearly swung back and forth, will only make their road ahead tougher.
