Chennai Super Kings have been dealt a major early blow after batting coach Michael Hussey confirmed that Ayush Mhatre has suffered a hamstring tear. The confirmation came following CSK\u2019s 10-run defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad at Uppal, where Mhatre\u2019s limited but promising impact with the bat was followed by an immediate concern on the field. Hussey said the injury \u201clooks bad\u201d and warned that the No. 3 batter is \u201cgoing to be a big loss\u201d for the side.<\/p>\n
Mhatre had looked sharp in the chase, striking 20 runs off 13 deliveries and providing the early impetus that CSK have often struggled to generate. While he was batting alongside captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, however, he found it difficult to turn over a tight second run. He was soon seen holding his left hamstring, prompting urgent attention during the match. From that point, his discomfort was evident as he tried to complete his running between the wickets, and he was dismissed just a couple of balls later. His exit came after a catch taken brilliantly by Heinrich Klaasen off Nitish Reddy.<\/p>\n
After being sent back, Mhatre had to be assisted off the field, with Ramakrishna Ghosh and physio Taifun Simsek helping him away. Hussey was then candid about the situation, stating, \u201cObviously it is a hamstring tear,\u201d while adding that the severity is still being assessed. He explained that the club will scan him either the next day or the day after, but stressed that it \u201clooks pretty bad\u201d at the moment.<\/p>\n
Despite the disappointment, Hussey also pointed to the opportunity the injury could open up within the squad. He said Mhatre has been in \u201creally nice touch\u201d for CSK and described him as an exciting young talent, but acknowledged that his absence will force someone else into the spotlight. \u201cIt\u2019s going to give someone else an opportunity,\u201d he said, highlighting how the team has several players who haven\u2019t consistently received that chance. Hussey added that while CSK are obviously hurt to lose Mhatre, it will also be \u201cexciting\u201d for another player to step in and make the most of the moment.<\/p>\n
CSK now have a four-day window before their next outing, when they face Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium.
