Hayden suggested the top three are often batting for impact and therefore have a different freedom to take the game on. In that context, he referenced Shahrukh Khan\u2019s role, implying that the numbers can look extreme if viewed only through totals and averages, yet still reflect a season\u2019s worth of high-value striking when opportunities are limited.<\/p>\n<p>Hayden\u2019s comments were backed by the season\u2019s returns mentioned during the discussion: Shahrukh Khan has made 35 runs from 25 balls, while Tewatia has 49 off 42.<\/p>\n<p>However, the batting coach underlined that the issue wasn\u2019t simply about those two. He added that Phillips\u2014who has 67 from 54 balls\u2014along with Shahrukh and Tewatia were finding it tough because the top three were not at their best. He argued that players like Phillips bring an excellent T20 track record and strike rate, but for their batting to be effective, Gujarat need a substantial platform first, with the bulk of the work being done up front.<\/p>\n<p>Hayden said Gujarat shouldn\u2019t be giving those batters too many balls, stressing that it isn\u2019t their job description or the role they are trained for. In his assessment, the Titans are not a conservative unit; they are a \u201cthinking\u201d and adaptable group that is built around roles and execution rather than a cautious approach that would typically lead to fewer big scores. He acknowledged that even with their proactive style, they were not able to adapt correctly on the day, and by the time the innings had progressed, the situation had deteriorated too far for a middle-order rebuild.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe worry isn\u2019t just today about the middle order,\u201d Hayden said, adding that it would be unfair to claim they would automatically start scoring at a rate that could rescue the innings. He described the moment as one where, as the match wore on, the feeling in the batting dugout shifted toward a sinking ship.<\/p>\n<h2>Du Plessis questions the current threat level<\/h2>\n<p>On ESPNcricinfo\u2019s TimeOut show, Faf du Plessis was blunt in his assessment. He said the conversation before and during the watch had centred on whether anyone in Gujarat could replicate an innings similar to a Tilak Varma-type knock\u2014one that can produce a century even from a difficult position. Du Plessis indicated that, based on current form, he did not believe there was a batter who posed that kind of threat at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>He clarified that while he could not be sure anyone was set to reach a hundred in the present circumstances, he argued that teams elsewhere in the IPL can name players who have the capability, form, and shot-making to do it. His conclusion was that, at least then, he wasn\u2019t convinced the Titans\u2019 middle order currently had that potential.<\/p>\n<h2>Bench options and a possible No. 4 solution<\/h2>\n<p>Abhinav Mukund, meanwhile, suggested the answers may be available within the Gujarat Titans squad itself. He said he was surprised the team had shown so much faith in Shahrukh Khan and Rahul Tewatia in the role they occupy, implying that the franchise believes those players can execute in the back-end when required. Mukund then argued that Gujarat may have overlooked some strong young Indian players sitting on the bench.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed first to Nishant Sindhu, noting that Sindhu had spent a year with CSK, yet has not received a game for Gujarat, despite regularly being part of the India A setup. Mukund also referenced Kumar Kushagra, highlighting that Kushagra had just won the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with Jharkhand.<\/p>\n<p>Turning to the Jharkhand setup, Mukund compared the attention on Ishan Kishan with another performer who also produced a lot of runs for the side.
