Gujarat Titans appear to have an embarrassment of riches. The simple fact that an all-rounder with Jason Holder\u2019s pedigree cannot secure a spot in the starting XI underlines just how deep the squad is. Holder\u2019s reputation has only strengthened with time; at 34, he is still among the more seasoned campaigners in the group, and his opportunity could arrive sooner rather than later\u2014particularly in light of the recent returns that have failed to match expectations from Glenn Phillips, Shahrukh Khan and Rahul Tewatia.<\/p>\n
Holder, who has played 69 Tests, 138 ODI matches and 96 T20 internationals, most recently featured in the West Indies\u2019 squad for the T20 World Cup. He returned with figures of 10 wickets and 141 runs. With the ball, his most productive spell came against Nepal, when he claimed four wickets. With the bat, he also struck 49 runs against South Africa in the Super 8 stage.<\/p>\n
Yet those outings did not translate into an immediate role for Holder at the beginning of the Indian Premier League season. Shubman Gill\u2019s team slipped to sixth place on Monday after suffering a loss to five-time champions Mumbai Indians.<\/p>\n
Ahead of Gujarat Titans\u2019 encounter with Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Friday, Holder sat down for an interview where he discussed the current campaign, the increasing tilt of the T20 format towards batters, what makes Gill an effective leader, and why proactive coaching\u2014embodied by Ashish Nehra\u2014has become essential.<\/p>\n
Holder said the defeat to Mumbai Indians was \u201cdeflating\u201d and acknowledged the roller-coaster nature of any league season. He explained that, in tough losses, the key is for each individual to identify areas for improvement so that even small gains add up for the collective. While the team struggled badly the previous night, he felt it was not the end of the road and stressed that they were still not even halfway through the tournament. He added that players would be thinking hard and working together to raise their levels for the team.<\/p>\n
Holder replied that this trend has been present for some time. He singled out the IPL for introducing a second short ball for seamers, calling it a positive step. Even so, he questioned whether it has truly made life easier for bowlers when you look at the scores being posted. His view was that the extra option helps because batters often \u201ccamp\u201d on the front foot when a bowler only has one short-ball plan early in the over. With the second short ball now available, bowlers can use a front-end delivery and still keep something in reserve for later in the same over.<\/p>\n
However, he noted that modern batting has expanded the scale of what is possible. Since boundaries have become difficult to police regardless of the batter involved, bowlers must be even more accurate and more capable of executing challenging balls consistently.<\/p>\n
Holder said he would welcome larger boundaries, though he did not believe they need to be dramatically bigger. He pointed out that on many grounds, the ball\u2019s flight and the conditions make scoring options plentiful for batters. He referenced how mishits, top edges and inside edges can quickly find the rope, and how the fast outfields across India often turn what would be partial chances into guaranteed boundary outcomes. In his opinion, once the ball hits the gaps, it is frequently half-chased\u2014leaving bowlers very little room for recovery.<\/p>\n
He also argued that these venues are genuinely rewarding for batters because they do not require overhitting simply to reach the boundary. Even so, Holder insisted that for a bowler, such situations can be motivating. If he can perform well in the toughest circumstances, then success in more manageable conditions should follow. He added that during the World Cup he had also faced tough spells, and that \u201cfinding a way\u201d remains his guiding principle for bowlers in hard environments.<\/p>\n
Holder highlighted that one of Gill\u2019s strongest traits is leading by example. He described Gill\u2019s approach as highly professional and said he has noticed Gill\u2019s structured preparation and how he manages his overall routine. In Holder\u2019s assessment, Gill\u2019s leadership is rooted in the fact that others can watch how he plays and then model their own behaviours accordingly. He stressed that setting the right standards matters because it is difficult to ask teammates to do something if the leader is not doing it themselves. That, he said, is why Gill\u2019s example-based mindset is so significant.<\/p>\n
Holder said he would not confine the comparison solely to T20 cricket, noting that his experience has been primarily in international cricket. He believes the role of a head coach is evolving, with coaches increasingly viewed as managers who work alongside specialist skills trainers. In his view, this is where the sport is heading: coaching still needs to be active and present, not just managerial in nature.<\/p>\n
He praised the environment within the Titans, where Ashish Nehra leads the side. Holder described Nehra as hands-on, particularly because of his bowling expertise. He said it is important to have a coach who stays involved and whose presence can be felt. Holder even called Nehra \u201cthe energy god,\u201d adding that Nehra can lift the group for a challenge and offer clear, useful guidance. He also said Nehra\u2019s knowledge of the game is evident, making him a coach with strong attributes.<\/p>\n
Holder called the impact player rule \u201cvery controversial,\u201d pointing out that it has both benefits and drawbacks. He used a real match scenario involving Tilak Varma, who scored 100 and spent a significant time on his feet, while also taking a blow to the groin during the innings. Holder said that being required to keep fielding in such circumstances can be difficult. With the impact player rule, however, a team can effectively pause the problem by allowing another player to take over.<\/p>\n
Still, he rejected the idea that the rule is \u201ckilling\u201d all-rounders. He argued strongly that if someone is a genuine all-rounder, they should remain in the game regardless. In his view, the rule has likely separated true all-rounders from players who only fill in as part-time options\u2014those who might bowl a couple of overs as a backup or come in to hit a few balls. He added that, for him personally, the impact player system has pushed him to sharpen his skills so that he does not end up in the category of a player who might otherwise be used only as an impact option because one skill set does not match the other.<\/p>\n
He concluded that all-rounders now have to be sharper to justify their place both as backup options and as bowlers. He acknowledged that debate around the rule will always exist, with some days where people enjoy it and other days where they do not, but said that is simply part of how life goes.<\/p>\n
Holder said it would be naive to claim that players never consider a price tag. The important part, in his opinion, is how they manage the pressure that comes with it. He noted that the IPL is one of the few leagues that uses auctions, while other competitions tend to rely on different frameworks such as drafts. He referenced that the Hundred recently conducted an auction, that SA20 held an auction, and that ILT had an auction last year. He also pointed out that PSL used an auction this year, but broadly felt auctions can be good for players.<\/p>\n
He then suggested cricket could even move further toward a football-like model, where a player\u2019s salary is based on perceived value and teams negotiate what they can afford, potentially with fewer hard restrictions. He compared it to the NBA, where there is a salary cap and players are paid or negotiated within those boundaries. Holder said it is unclear if football has a salary cap, but he believes cricket might reach a similar approach if teams can operate within a budget and manage recruitment accordingly.<\/p>\n
Even so, he said he has no issue with auctions. For players, though, he stressed that auction outcomes are beyond their control. Whether a contract is secured for INR 1 crore or INR 25 crore, the responsibility for performance still falls on the individual. Ultimately, he said, players should focus on earning the next contract milestone\u2014whether that means chasing another INR 25 crore, another INR 1 crore, or improving their value from one level to the next.
