Under the leadership of Hardik Pandya, MI fell short while chasing a 208-run target, marking yet another setback in a season that is rapidly narrowing their margin for error. The loss was their fifth defeat in seven matches, and with every result now carrying greater weight, another defeat would effectively dent their chances of reaching the playoffs. Currently, Mumbai have four points from seven games, and they would need at least six more wins from their remaining seven outings to keep a realistic pathway to qualification.<\/p>\n<h2>MI\u2019s playoffs equation<\/h2>\n<p>When the IPL expanded into a 10-team format starting in 2022, 16 points have generally been treated as the benchmark for playoff qualification. In that span, teams that reached the postseason from fourth place did so with 16 points in most cases.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2022, Royal Challengers Bengaluru secured a top-four spot with 16 points.<\/li>\n<li>In 2023, Mumbai Indians qualified in fourth place with 16 points.<\/li>\n<li>In 2025, Mumbai Indians again made the playoffs from fourth position on 16 points.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The one notable exception came in 2024, when four teams ended the league stage on 14 points. Those teams were Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants. Royal Challengers Bengaluru advanced thanks to a superior net run rate compared to the other sides on the same points total.<\/p>\n<h2>Can Mumbai reach the playoffs?<\/h2>\n<p>For Mumbai Indians to even land on 14 points, they would need to win five of their remaining seven matches. While that scenario is not outside the realm of possibility, the requirement is steep, and their recent results mean they will need a strong run of form to close the gap quickly.<\/p>\n<p>More updates
