Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings was billed as a potential thriller in IPL 2026, but the Wankhede Stadium contest on Thursday quickly turned into a mismatch. CSK, the five-time champions, cruised to a dominant 103-run victory, powered by Sanju Samson\u2019s unbeaten century and Akeal Hosein\u2019s four-wicket burst. Yet the most prominent storyline was not the on-field output\u2014it was Shardul Thakur being allowed to bat for Mumbai Indians even though he was not part of the playing XI.<\/p>\n

How Shardul Thakur was brought in<\/h2>\n

  1. Chennai\u2019s batting innings began, and in the 17th over, Mitchell Santner suffered an injury while fielding.<\/li>\n
  2. Santner injured his shoulder during the dismissal of Kartik Sharma, after taking a catch that involved a forward dive to complete a low catch.<\/li>\n
  3. At that stage, Mumbai Indians had already used their impact player slot, with Danish Malewar coming in for Allah Ghazanfar.<\/li>\n
  4. As a result, Shardul Thakur did not enter as the impact substitute; instead, he was named the concussion substitute for Santner.<\/li>\n
  5. Shardul walked out to bat as the concussion replacement, but he produced little impact for the hosts, scoring 6 runs from 12 balls.<\/li>\n
  6. During Mumbai\u2019s innings, cameras showed Santner in the dressing room wearing a sling to support his shoulder.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Replays later suggested Santner\u2019s head made contact with the ground while attempting the catch. At the moment of the incident, Santner had already completed his four-over spell, returning figures of 44 runs conceded and one wicket. Mumbai Indians owner Akash Ambani was also seen checking on Santner near the dugout soon after the injury.<\/p>\n

    After the match, head coach Mahela Jayawardene addressed the concussion-sub decision in the post-match press conference. He explained, \u201cSantner hit his head first, the neck and obviously the shoulder as well. He then went for a scan. Once he got back, he was lying down. Yes, the ice was there for the shoulder, but he felt that he wasn\u2019t stable, so we took him for a scan in that situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Jayawardene added, \u201cWe requested a concussion sub. It\u2019s at the match referee and the umpires\u2019 discretion. They allowed Shardul Thakur. It is what it is. But hopefully, Santner\u2019s injury isn\u2019t too bad. Once he\u2019s back, we\u2019ll have a look at it.\u201d<\/p>\n

    What the concussion-sub rules say<\/h2>\n

    The official regulations require each side to submit substitute names for concussion cases to the match referee before the start of the game. The five listed options must cover: one wicketkeeper, one batter, one all-rounder, one seamer, and one spinner. If the replacement player is also ruled concussed and needs to be substituted again, the match referee may consider a player outside the original set, following the established like-for-like approach.<\/p>\n

    CSK\u2019s dominant win and the match numbers<\/h2>\n

    With the convincing triumph over Mumbai Indians on Thursday, CSK moved up to the fifth position in the points table, collecting 6 points from 7 matches. Samson was named Player of the Match after delivering an unbeaten 101.<\/p>\n

    2. CSK posted 207\/6 in their 20 overs, with Samson driving the innings through his century.<\/li>\n
    3. In the chase, Akeal Hosein emerged as CSK\u2019s key match-winner, taking four wickets.<\/li>\n
    4. Noor Ahmed added two more wickets, while Jamie Overton, Anshul Kamboj, Mukesh Choudhary, and Gurjapneet Singh each finished with one wicket as well.<\/li>\n
