A Test cricketer from Pakistan has reportedly chosen to seek a new chapter with another country, citing the way he was treated by the Pakistan Cricket Board. The player in question is 31-year-old left-arm spinner Zafar Gohar, and the destination he is now aiming for is England.<\/p>\n
Gohar\u2019s background has long carried the kind of early promise that rarely fades quietly. He represented Pakistan in an ODI against England back in 2015, when he was only 19. That match, played at Sharjah, ended in Pakistan\u2019s defeat, yet Gohar still managed to trouble well-known batters such as Alex Hales and Joe Root. After that burst of impact, however, he did not receive another ODI call-up for a long stretch.<\/p>\n
Six years later, in 2021, he was recalled for a Test against New Zealand at Christchurch. In the only innings he bowled, he went wicketless and conceded more than 150 runs. Pakistan lost the encounter by an innings, but Gohar did show fight with the bat, scoring 34 and 37 in the two innings he played. Still, the opportunities did not continue beyond that moment, leaving him with a sense of unfinished business.<\/p>\n
Speaking on the experience and the way his role was defined, Gohar recalled how Misbah-ul-Haq approached him ahead of the Test. He said he was told Pakistan did not have enough seam-bowling all-rounders, so he would be required to bat at number eight, and that if needed, he would bowl a small number of overs. Gohar added that in that Test he made 34 and 37 in each innings, but after that, there was little to no follow-up communication about his future.<\/p>\n
From there, Gohar\u2019s frustration focused increasingly on the PCB\u2019s approach to his performances. He claimed he did not feel he got the chances he felt he deserved while playing in Pakistan. He pointed to a season where he took nearly 50 wickets for Gloucestershire in 2022 and also scored almost 500 runs with the bat. He then said that after returning to Pakistan, he went on to produce two more five-wicket hauls in three games.<\/p>\n
Yet, he said that despite those outputs, the message he received from a selector was discouraging. In his account, the selector suggested it did not matter what he did in county cricket and that those achievements were not really valued. That, Gohar said, was the turning point that made him believe there was little value in waiting for chances that were not coming, prompting him to consider a different route where he could do everything within his power to earn selection.<\/p>\n
That alternative path is now connected to his England ambitions. Gohar currently plays for English county side Middlesex, having moved from Gloucestershire last season. Over the last year, he has continued to build his case, with his batting appearing to have improved as well. Earlier this month, in his most recent county innings, he scored a crucial 84 against Northamptonshire.<\/p>\n
Gohar also acknowledged a broader trend in English selection over the years: a preference for bowling all-rounders. If that opportunity arrives, he said he will be ready to take it.
