Dale Steyn showered Virat Kohli with praise, calling him a \u201cgenius\u201d, while Ian Bishop highlighted the India batter\u2019s \u201ctempo\u201d after Kohli\u2019s match-winning display helped Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) cruise to a comfortable victory over Gujarat Titans (GT) in their IPL 2026 fixture at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Friday.<\/p>\n

Kohli\u2019s 81 powers RCB chase<\/h2>\n

  1. Kohli opened the innings and struck 81 off 44 balls, posting a strike rate of 184.09.<\/li>\n
  2. His innings also played a key part in RCB\u2019s run chase, with the team eventually reaching the target of 206.<\/li>\n
  3. Devdutt Padikkal chipped in with 55 from 27 deliveries and shared a second-wicket stand of 115 from 59 balls with Kohli.<\/li>\n
  4. While Padikkal was quicker, Kohli managed 59 off 32 balls during the same partnership phase.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    After the win, Kohli reclaimed the Orange Cap. By reaching 328 runs from seven matches so far this season, he moved back to the top of the tally.<\/p>\n

    Steyn, who previously played alongside Kohli at RCB, described the way Kohli approaches matches as something special. On ESPNcricinfo\u2019s TimeOut show, he said: \u201cHe\u2019s always looking to try and get better. He\u2019s what we talk about. He plays what\u2019s in front of him. He reads the situation.\u201d Steyn also added that Kohli\u2019s ability to calculate how a game should unfold from the first ball he faces is among the best he has seen. He finished by stating that Kohli has effectively charted a path to the final runs and is the best chaser he has ever known.<\/p>\n

    Padikkal, speaking after the game, explained how the dressing room mood helped RCB build belief. He said that after GT\u2019s innings, the group felt they were roughly 15 to 20 runs short, and that belief carried straight into their batting chase.<\/p>\n

    Padikkal also spoke about Kohli\u2019s mindset and preparation. He said that even after achieving everything there is to achieve in the format, Kohli continues to give 100% in every practice session and every match. In Padikkal\u2019s view, that drive and passion is rare and tends to spread through the team, adding that Kohli\u2019s energy helps everyone in the side.<\/p>\n

    From evolution to high-tempo brilliance<\/h2>\n

    The commitment and determination Padikkal referred to are reflected in Kohli\u2019s T20 progression over time. Kohli first crossed a strike-rate threshold of 140 in 2010, but he only managed to surpass it in three seasons up to IPL 2024. In 2024, he scored at 154.70, and in 2025 he averaged a strike rate of 144.71. This season, his strike rate stands at 163.18.<\/p>\n

    For Kohli, the runs have rarely been the issue. No batter has ever scored more in an IPL season than the 973 runs Kohli made in 2016. Beyond 2017 and 2022, he has not finished a season outside the 400-run range since 2016. In his last three campaigns, he posted 639, 741 and 657 runs, underlining how consistently he has produced across years.<\/p>\n

    Bishop, while praising Kohli\u2019s batting, focused on what he sees as the extraordinary nature of the transformation. He said he loves Kohli as a batter, but noted that watching a player in his mid-30s\u2014now 37\u2014continue to evolve in a game that has become faster, higher-tempo and more intense is remarkable. Bishop added that Kohli has managed to carve out a role for himself even after the sport\u2019s tempo shifted dramatically.<\/p>\n

    Chases have long been one of Kohli\u2019s strongest traits in white-ball cricket, and after securing yet another Player-of-the-Match award, he gave a glimpse into how RCB planned their chase. Kohli said they had looked at a chase of 230\u2013235 at one stage, and the feedback they received was that the pitch wasn\u2019t bad at all\u2014described as the best batting conditions they had seen this season. He added that if they stayed in the game long enough, it would become increasingly difficult for GT\u2019s bowlers, and that the intent was to keep pressure on them.<\/p>\n

    According to Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal was going \u201cgreat guns\u201d and the key was maintaining clarity and a steady partnership without losing confidence. He said the partnership benefited from intent, clear feedback and no doubts, which ultimately helped them get the job done.<\/p>\n

    RCB appeared comfortable with the way Kohli wants to play his role. The franchise won the title last year for the first time, and Kohli\u2019s performance at the Chinnaswamy felt like a message to the rest of the competition as RCB wrapped up their league-stage matches at the ground.
