Big scores, breakout youngsters, and Virat Kohli quietly piling on runs\u2014those are familiar IPL storylines. Yet IPL 2026 has also delivered plenty of curveballs, and not every marquee purchase has hit the ground running. Here\u2019s a mid-season snapshot of what\u2019s shaping the conversation as the league moves through its middle stages.<\/p>\n

Orange Cap: no single runaway leader yet<\/h2>\n

With 34 matches completed, the Orange Cap race still doesn\u2019t have a clear, unchallenged front-runner. Traditionally, the top run-getter list is usually led by batters who build steady momentum across the season. This year, however, the race has been shaken up by high-impact T20 batters who can change games in a hurry.<\/p>\n

Two-time Orange Cap winner Kohli currently leads the standings. Still, the summit has seen multiple occupants, with Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal all spending time at the top. Sanju Samson is also rising quickly, with his two centuries acting as a major driver.<\/p>\n

The scoring-rate story is where the most noticeable patterns appear. Priyansh Arya, Sooryavanshi and Abhishek have set a sharp benchmark for strike rates in this season\u2019s run-chase grind, hitting at 248.23, 220.86 and 215.33 respectively. Their aggressive approach has been central to the fortunes of their teams, with Punjab Kings currently placed first, Rajasthan Royals third, and Sunrisers Hyderabad fourth on the table.<\/p>\n

Abhishek also tops the six-hitting chart with 27 maximums. Rajat Patidar follows with 23, while Arya and Sooryavanshi have 20 each.<\/p>\n

Even with all that activity at the top, the most surprising feature is that the top three in this mid-season phase do not include \u201cbig names\u201d in the usual sense.<\/p>\n

Bowling trends: pace at the forefront, spinners still rare at the top<\/h2>\n

Fast bowlers have largely controlled the wicket tally conversation. Ravi Bishnoi and Harsh Dubey are the only spinners to appear inside the top ten at this point.<\/p>\n

Anshul Kamboj leads the wicket chart with 14 scalps, with his speciality coming at the death. Prince Yadav is next with 13 wickets, having impressed across multiple stages of an innings. Eshan Malinga sits third on 12 wickets and is tied with last season\u2019s Purple Cap winner Prasidh Krishna.<\/p>\n

Sooryavanshi under pressure: the Mohsin Khan spell that stood out<\/h2>\n

There has been a serious effort across teams to figure out how to contain Sooryavanshi, the 15-year-old sensation who has played with confidence even against top strike-bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah.<\/p>\n

  1. The defining moment came from uncapped Lucknow Super Giants left-arm pacer Mohsin Khan.<\/li>\n
  2. In the fourth over, Mohsin stuck to tough lengths and extracted just enough movement off the surface to tighten the noose ball by ball.<\/li>\n
  3. Sooryavanshi was forced into a stretch of five consecutive dot balls.<\/li>\n
  4. When pressure escalated, he looked for a release shot and miscued a swipe across the line.<\/li>\n
  5. Digvesh Rathi charged back from extra cover and completed a calm, well-timed catch.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Mohsin has appeared in only three matches, but he has already made an impact\u2014posting the second-best economy rate of 6.80 among bowlers who have faced at least 50 balls.<\/p>\n

    Closing overs matter: Deshpande\u2019s 10-run finish for RR<\/h2>\n

    In an era where even massive totals can feel vulnerable, Tushar Deshpande produced a memorable final over for Rajasthan Royals. He defended 10 runs against Gujarat Titans with Rashid Khan in the batting lineup.<\/p>\n

    Deshpande conceded just four runs and also struck a crucial wicket, turning the contest at the most important time.<\/p>\n

    New faces and shifting roles across the league<\/h2>\n

    As with previous seasons, IPL 2026 continues to uncover fresh names who add to the wider conversation about how quickly India\u2019s domestic pipeline is feeding franchise cricket.<\/p>\n

    Mukul Choudhary became an overnight talking point for Lucknow Super Giants after delivering an unbeaten 54 to stun Kolkata Knight Riders in a thrilling chase. His innings has stood out even in a season that has already produced six centuries.<\/p>\n

    Sunrisers Hyderabad, meanwhile, have uncovered a future-ready pace pair in Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain. Together, they dismantled Rajasthan Royals\u2019 batting and left the team reeling at 9 for 5.<\/p>\n

    SRH\u2019s spin options have also grown, with wrist-spinner Shivang Kumar emerging as another find.<\/p>\n

    For Rajasthan Royals, Brijesh Sharma played a key role in a tight game where they defended 160. Another name to watch is Ashok Sharma\u2014after spending two seasons on the sidelines with KKR and RR, he has impressed for Gujarat Titans, taking six wickets in as many games and generating searing pace.<\/p>\n

    Bumrah\u2019s unusual rough patch and the rare lull that followed<\/h2>\n

    Jasprit Bumrah, fresh off helping India win the T20 World Cup, was expected to be MI\u2019s go-to solution whenever the ball needed tightening. But this season has not looked like typical \u201cBumrah\u201d form. He went wicketless for five straight matches and also delivered an over against Punjab Kings that cost more than 10 runs\u2014an uncommon dip by his standards.<\/p>\n

    The wicket drought ended in a familiar, trademark fashion: he took a wicket with the very first ball against Gujarat Titans, and then followed it with another wicket against Chennai Super Kings.<\/p>\n

    Big-money buys: momentum still missing for several<\/h2>\n

    In the IPL, high-priced signings often come with their own uncertainty, and that pattern has continued in IPL 2026.<\/p>\n

    Cameron Green, bought by KKR for INR 25.20 crore\u2014the most expensive overseas acquisition in IPL history\u2014has struggled to find full rhythm with the bat. He has scored 162 runs across seven innings, with a significant portion of those runs coming in a loss against Gujarat Titans. His bowling has been restricted to only three matches due to workload management, and he has taken just one wicket.<\/p>\n

    Matheesha Pathirana, the second-largest buy at INR 18 crore, joined KKR late after receiving clearance from SLC, yet he hasn\u2019t played a match so far.<\/p>\n

    The uncapped CSK duo\u2014Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer\u2014were purchased for INR 14.20 crore each, but their opportunities have been limited, with four and two appearances respectively and little impact so far.<\/p>\n

    Liam Livingstone, signed by SRH for INR 13 crore, has also featured in only two matches to date.<\/p>\n

    Overseas performers adding punch beyond the headlines<\/h2>\n

    While Indian players have dominated much of the narrative, a few overseas newcomers have also made a mark.<\/p>\n

    Cooper Connolly, an Australian allrounder who has been used primarily as a batter, has slotted smoothly into Punjab Kings\u2019 batting order. A highlight was his fluent 87 against Lucknow Super Giants in New Chandigarh.<\/p>\n

    With the ball, Nandre Burger for Rajasthan Royals and Jacob Duffy for RCB have been especially effective, particularly during powerplay overs.<\/p>\n

    Shreyas Iyer\u2019s catch: a moment that stopped the Wankhede crowd<\/h2>\n

    Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer delivered a defensive brilliance against Mumbai Indians that left even the opposition stunned.<\/p>\n

    Fielding at long-on, he sprinted across and launched himself full stretch. He caught the ball mid-air with his left hand, transferred it to his right as he crossed the boundary rope, and then executed a sharp relay to Xavier Bartlett before landing. That dismissal of Hardik Pandya briefly silenced the Wankhede crowd.<\/p>\n

    Captaincy arcs: Kohli\u2019s consistency, Rohit\u2019s disruption, and Dhoni\u2019s waiting game<\/h2>\n

    Kohli has continued doing what he does best\u2014consistent, high-quality batting whenever the situation demands it. Rohit Sharma, though, has endured a more stop-start run after a hamstring problem disrupted his season. He missed a few matches after an explosive start.<\/p>\n

    As for MS Dhoni, his IPL appearances have mostly been limited to training sessions. With the ongoing will-he-won\u2019t-he question appearing at every time Chennai Super Kings walk out for a game, his season at 44 has been defined by anticipation.
