MI Cape Town batting coach Hashim Amla is convinced Connor Esterhuizen possesses the key ingredients needed to thrive as a modern T20 batter. In the span of just a month, the Pretoria Capitals star\u2019s reputation has surged, with his stock rising rapidly after a standout stretch that has also paved his way into the IPL.<\/p>\n

From SA20 success to an IPL opportunity<\/h2>\n

  1. Esterhuizen was named Player of the Series in New Zealand during the SA20 Rising Star\u2019s maiden Proteas tour, after delivering impactful performances.<\/li>\n
  2. His displays in Aotearoa helped him earn a place in the wider spotlight, adding him to the growing group of young South Africans drawing attention from IPL franchises.<\/li>\n
  3. Gujarat Titans then signed the 24-year-old as a replacement for England batter Tom Banton, a former MI Cape Town teammate.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Amla, who has worked closely with Esterhuizen, believes the youngster\u2019s approach to learning is a major part of what makes him stand out. The veteran coach has been involved with Esterhuizen across two seasons at MI Cape Town, before that working relationship continued at domestic level with the Lions.<\/p>\n

    Speaking about their time together, Amla said that when he met Esterhuizen at the Lions, the batter was consistently eager to pick up new ideas and try different ways of playing. He stressed that this mindset matters for anyone aiming to succeed across formats.<\/p>\n

    Amla also highlighted the mental side of adapting between games, saying that players need the flexibility to shift quickly from one format to another. He added that such adaptability must show up in training routines and in how a batter works with varying plans, including the ability to switch between those plans rapidly.<\/p>\n

    For Amla, Esterhuizen\u2019s capacity to process and apply information is what separates him from others. The former Proteas batter, who amassed 18,672 runs across all international formats, suggested that even early on it is possible to sense a player\u2019s potential, describing Esterhuizen\u2019s growth as notably fast.<\/p>\n

    He explained that when a young cricketer is hungry to learn, they tend to receive a lot of coaching and tactical input. In that context, Amla said one of the most important skills is learning how to filter what is useful and what should be ignored.<\/p>\n

    Once a player begins experimenting, Amla noted, they must quickly determine what actually works in their game and what does not. He said Esterhuizen\u2019s call-up to the national team did not surprise him, pointing to his performance in four-day cricket and also to a productive T20 run with the Lions.<\/p>\n

    Amla further described Esterhuizen as a batter who embodies the modern-day profile: strong technique, the ability to play long balls, and the readiness to deliver when opportunities arise.<\/p>\n

    A potential international path and a role in the middle order<\/h3>\n

    Amla also drew parallels between Esterhuizen and England wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, referencing his own experience watching young talent emerge at Surrey during the later stages of his playing career. Amla said that when he started at Surrey, Smith had already been a youngster coming through, and that the two players share similar attributes.<\/p>\n

    He described that type of batter as someone with a sound technique, who is powerful and capable of clearing the boundary. In Amla\u2019s view, that skill set can translate into Test cricket as well\u2014particularly in the middle order, where the batter can take control and change the tempo.<\/p>\n

    Amla said Esterhuizen offers a comparable blend: technique solid enough to handle a moving ball, paired with the ability to be difficult to stop once he finds a chance to score.<\/p>\n

    Where Esterhuizen fits in the batting order<\/h2>\n

    There has been ongoing discussion about the best spot for Esterhuizen in a batting lineup. Amla noted that during his MI Cape Town stint, he was often used as a finisher, while his move to the Capitals has seen him promoted higher in the order.<\/p>\n

    By his own admission, Esterhuizen does not currently have a preference for where he bats in his career. Amla believes this flexibility increases his value across roles and match situations.<\/p>\n

    He said the team believes Esterhuizen can play anywhere from positions 1 to 6, adding that even within the Lions setup he was able to fit into multiple batting spots.<\/p>\n

    Amla also explained why that kind of versatility is not easy. He said a batter needs a technique capable of handling the new ball if they are expected to bat near the top. Just as importantly, they must have a strong \u201cmiddle game\u201d\u2014meaning they can rotate the strike, run hard between wickets, find gaps, and, for T20 cricket, consistently hit boundaries in the form of fours and sixes.<\/p>\n

    To Amla, Esterhuizen has the strength for that style of play. Looking ahead, he suggested that a No. 4 position could act as a buffer between the top order and the middle order, concluding that such a role may help maximise the batter\u2019s impact.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
