Punjab Kings\u2019 chase of 265 delivered a record-breaking night packed with boundaries, milestones and a handful of tough lessons for KL Rahul\u2019s side. The run chase not only cleared a demanding target, it also rewrote several T20 and IPL benchmarks, with powerplay dominance and massive individual production sitting at the centre of the story.<\/p>\n
The 265-run target chased down by Punjab Kings stands as the biggest successful pursuit ever recorded in all T20 cricket. In doing so, they bettered their own previous high of 262, which Punjab Kings had reached against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens during IPL 2024.<\/p>\n
Punab Kings also set a benchmark for consistency at the top end of totals, recording their 11th successful chase of a 200-plus score in T20 cricket. That is the most by any team in the format. The next-best tally belongs to Australia and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who have seven successful 200+ chases each. Against Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings have now pulled off a 200+ chase on only three occasions, and all three have arrived since 2025.<\/p>\n
In terms of overall output, 529 runs were scored in the match, forming the second-highest aggregate in any T20 fixture\u2014just behind the 549-run game played between RCB and SRH in Bengaluru in IPL 2024. The boundary count was equally staggering, with 82 fours and sixes landing in the match: 42 by Delhi Capitals and 40 by Punjab Kings, the most ever registered in a T20 contest.<\/p>\n
Despite the celebrations around the chase, the day belonged to KL Rahul for his personal brilliance. Rahul\u2019s unbeaten 152* was the highest score by an Indian batter in T20 cricket, eclipsing Tilak Varma\u2019s 151 for Hyderabad against Meghalaya in Rajkot in 2024. It also ranks as the third-highest individual score in IPL history, sitting behind Chris Gayle\u2019s 175* and Brendon McCullum\u2019s 158*.<\/p>\n
Rahul\u2019s 152* also joined an exclusive list of top scores that ended in a loss. There have been just two instances of an individual going past 150 and still finishing on the losing side in T20 cricket: Rahul\u2019s 152* in the present game, and Chris Gayle\u2019s 151* for Somerset against Kent in Taunton in the T20 Blast 2015. In IPL, the previous top score that came in a defeat belonged to Rishabh Pant, who made 128* for Delhi Capitals against SRH in 2018.<\/p>\n
This was also Rahul\u2019s third century in the IPL that ended with his team losing, the most such instances for any batter in the league. Heading into the match\u2019s aftermath, Rahul has six IPL hundreds in total\u2014two each for Punjab Kings, Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals. He is the first player to register two centuries for three separate franchises in the competition. Sanju Samson and Quinton de Kock are the other names who have scored hundreds for three different teams in the IPL.<\/p>\n
One more milestone underlined how fast Rahul got to his landmark: reaching 100 in only 47 balls makes it the first time he has made the century under 50 deliveries in IPL.<\/p>\n
Punjab Kings made their intent clear early with 116\/0 in the powerplay, which is the second-highest opening six-over score in IPL history. Only Sunrisers Hyderabad\u2019s 125\/0\u2014also against Delhi Capitals in Delhi\u2014sits above it. The 116\/0 mark additionally represents the highest powerplay total in IPL, surpassing 93\/1 against KKR in Kolkata in 2024 and 93\/0 against SRH in Mullanpur earlier this season.<\/p>\n
Prabhsimran Singh\u2019s contribution in the opening phase was another highlight. His 71 runs became the fifth-highest powerplay tally in an IPL innings. Among Indian batters, only Suresh Raina has a higher aggregate in this phase\u2014Raina struck 87 for CSK against Punjab Kings at the Wankhede in 2014. For an uncapped Indian player, the previous best in this powerplay period was Yashasvi Jaiswal\u2019s 62 for RR against KKR at Eden Gardens.<\/p>\n
The match also featured a huge partnership between Rahul and Nitish Rana. Their stand of 220 runs became the second-highest partnership for any wicket in the tournament, behind only the 229-run alliance between Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers against Gujarat Lions in Bengaluru in 2016. The prior top mark for a pair of Indian batters in T20s was 213, made by Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav for Mumbai against Sikkim in Indore in 2019.<\/p>\n
Delhi Capitals\u2019 innings produced another record for timing and tempo. Their 162 runs between overs 11 and 20 is the joint second-highest figure for that segment in an IPL innings. RCB had scored 172 against Gujarat Lions in Bengaluru in 2016, which remains higher. Punjab Kings have also posted 162 in the same overs window, doing so against CSK in Cuttack in 2014.<\/p>\n
Punjab Kings also left a mark in the opening overs, scoring 147 in the first 10 deliveries. That total ranks as the fourth-highest team score in that phase in IPL history.
