Instead, it turned into a harsh lesson in how quickly a chase can swing when routine catches don\u2019t stick and pressure begins to look messy. The collapse wasn\u2019t about the size of the target\u2014264 is usually a commanding one in T20 cricket\u2014but about the thin margin between control and chaos, and how easily that margin can evaporate when the fielding side loses its grip.<\/p>\n
Former India opener Virender Sehwag didn\u2019t hold back after Delhi\u2019s six-wicket loss to Punjab Kings. He targeted Karun Nair\u2019s performance in the field, arguing that the substitute fielder wasted two key opportunities after dropping Shreyas Iyer twice during Punjab\u2019s record chase. Sehwag\u2019s criticism landed especially hard because Nair wasn\u2019t in the original playing XI and had been brought in only as a fielder after Rahul left the field due to dehydration.<\/p>\n
Speaking on Cricbuzz, Sehwag said Nair\u2019s errors were simply not acceptable, particularly given the circumstances. In his view, players who aren\u2019t getting regular chances can\u2019t afford to squander the moments they\u2019re handed in a match. \u201cIt\u2019s just not acceptable. Firstly, you aren\u2019t getting matches. And now, when you have a chance as a fielder, at least do some fielding. If you drop catches even there, then the captain will think that since he dropped catches, let us not pick him,\u201d Sehwag said, framing the issue as both performance and selection trust.<\/p>\n
The criticism came after Delhi looked well set for victory, only to lose their grip at the critical stage of Punjab\u2019s pursuit. Rahul\u2019s unbeaten 152 lifted DC to 264\/2, a score that typically leaves the chasing team with very little margin for error. Punjab, though, kept finding momentum through a fierce chase driven by Shreyas Iyer. Iyer finished 71 not out off 36 balls and guided PBKS to overhaul the target in 18.5 overs, turning what should have been a straightforward chase into a statement finish.<\/p>\n
Nair\u2019s fielding lapses arrived when the match was most vulnerable. With Shreyas already in rhythm, he was offered two quick chances near the boundary line. At long-off, Nair couldn\u2019t hold on, and then he put down another opportunity at long-on. Delhi were searching for a breakthrough to disrupt the chase, while Punjab still had plenty to do. But those two dropped chances allowed Iyer to keep dictating the tempo, and in a chase like this, control is everything.<\/p>\n
Sehwag also argued that a player cannot reduce themselves to just one role, particularly when the job is clear. \u201cAll of this happens. Just because you are a batter, batting isn\u2019t your only job. Picking catches and completing run outs are also your jobs. Sorry to say, but Karun Nair, you came in just to field, dropped two catches and because of those two drops, you lost the game,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
For Delhi, the defeat hurt even more because their batting had been good enough to win most T20 matches. Rahul\u2019s innings gave them a strong platform, but Punjab\u2019s chase kept building as DC failed to close key moments in the field. Captain Axar Patel also acknowledged after the game that Delhi deserved to lose, pointing directly at their fielding.<\/p>\n
Sehwag\u2019s most pointed observation centred on selection clarity. Since Nair was already outside the XI, Sehwag believed such opportunities for returning to the side become decisive. \u201cIf I am the captain and he is a very important player and drops two catches, I can ignore that. But if he isn\u2019t in the playing XI and asks me for a chance, I will say that you aren\u2019t playing because of the dropped catches,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
R Ashwin later offered a more sympathetic angle, explaining that substitute fielders can be thrown into high-pressure situations with little time to settle. Even so, Sehwag\u2019s case remained tied to match consequence: Delhi didn\u2019t lose due to a single slip in isolation. They lost because the two missed chances landed at the one stage where Punjab needed its best batter to survive\u2014and where Delhi needed him removed.<\/p>\n
In the end, Punjab\u2019s chase of 265 demanded precision, yet Delhi provided openings that made perfection unnecessary.
