New Zealand white-ball captain Mitchell Santner is expected to miss cricket for at least a month after New Zealand Cricket confirmed the seriousness of a shoulder problem. In a media update issued on Friday, May 1, it was revealed that Santner has sustained a grade three ACL injury to the shoulder, ruling him out of the upcoming one-off Test against Ireland as well as the first Test of the England series.<\/p>\n
The injury dates back to an IPL match on April 23, when Santner was playing for Mumbai Indians against Chennai Super Kings. While attempting a catch in the field, he landed awkwardly after the ball came into his area, injuring his shoulder in the process and also striking his head on the ground. Mumbai Indians subsequently brought in Shardul Thakur as the concussion substitute for Santner. He was later pictured in the dressing room using an ice pack on the affected shoulder, as he moved through the immediate recovery steps.<\/p>\n
Santner then returned home, where he underwent further evaluation. He was later replaced at Mumbai Indians by Keshav Maharaj, another left-arm spinner. Before this season, Maharaj had featured in just two IPL matches overall, and he had joined MI for INR 75 lakh. Upon arriving back in New Zealand this week, Santner consulted a specialist, and updated scans confirmed the full extent of the injury, ultimately leading to the extended layoff.<\/p>\n
On the international front, the one-off Test against Ireland starts on May 27. New Zealand\u2019s England tour gets underway from June 4 at Lord\u2019s, with two further Tests scheduled at The Oval and Trent Bridge.
