Salman Ali Agha has once again brought the focus back on the Asia Cup 2025 handshake controversy, revisiting a moment that became a talking point during last year\u2019s tournament. The incident centred on India captain Suryakumar Yadav, who did not take part in the customary pre-match handshake with Pakistan\u2019s counterpart. That choice was widely interpreted as a show of solidarity with the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack, an event that claimed 26 lives, and it came during a period of rising political and sporting tensions following Operation Sindoor.<\/p>\n

As the tournament progressed, the decision was not confined to the pre-toss ritual. Indian players also avoided handshakes after matches, carrying the same approach across all three meetings between the two sides at the event, including the final\u2014games India won each time. The issue has now resurfaced after Agha discussed the episode during an appearance on an ARY podcast.<\/p>\n

What Agha said happened before the toss<\/h2>\n

  1. Agha said that, prior to the tournament, the normal handshake protocol was followed during a press conference involving the two teams.<\/li>\n
  2. He added that the sides also shook hands during the trophy photoshoot, suggesting routine interactions early on.<\/li>\n
  3. According to Agha, when he went for the toss, things felt \u201ccompletely normal,\u201d even though he sensed they might not remain that way.<\/li>\n
  4. He explained that he had been told in advance that the handshake would not happen, and that he accepted the instruction without resistance.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In his explanation, Agha said: \u201cBefore the tournament, a press conference was held, during which a handshake took place. During the trophy photoshoot, we shook hands as well. So, when I went for the toss, I was completely normal. Of course, I had an idea that things wouldn\u2019t be as normal, but I didn\u2019t think it would escalate to the point where there would be no handshake. I didn\u2019t expect that.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Agha further detailed how the message was delivered to him. He said he went for the toss with his media manager, Naim Bhai, and that the match referee\u2014whose name he said he could not recall\u2014pulled him aside. The referee, Agha claimed, told him that Pakistan would not be shaking hands and that he should keep that in mind. Agha responded that if there was no handshake, then it would be fine.<\/p>\n

    He added: \u201cI went for the toss with my media manager, Naim Bhai. The match referee\u2014I don\u2019t recall his name\u2014took me aside and told me, \u2018They are going to do this; there won\u2019t be a handshake, so please keep that in mind\u2019. I replied, \u2018If there\u2019s no handshake, then so be it\u2019. It\u2019s not like I was desperate to shake hands. So that\u2019s how it happened; he told me beforehand that there would be no handshake.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Describing what followed after the match, Agha said the teams did not change course even after the result. \u201cAfter the match ended, we lost, and we were walking toward their pavilion for the handshake, they still didn\u2019t shake hands,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

    Role-model responsibility and wider fallout<\/h2>\n

    Beyond the physical gesture itself, Agha argued that athletes who are in the public eye carry extra responsibility for their actions. He said he did not believe it was the right approach, stressing how quickly visible behaviour can influence younger fans.<\/p>\n

    \u201cI\u2019ve said this many times I don\u2019t think this is the right thing to do. When we represent a nation\u2014and I play for Pakistan\u2014people watch me. Children will pick up on this, and if it happens in a club game the next day, it will be because of me in some way, as I\u2019m a part of it. When you are a role model, I believe doing these things is important,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

    The controversy also spilled into the final\u2019s presentation ceremony. During the post-match presentation of the Asia Cup final, the Indian team did not accept the trophy from Asian Cricket Council chief Mohsin Naqvi. Naqvi, who also serves as Pakistan\u2019s Interior Minister and leads the Pakistan Cricket Board, was left waiting as players maintained their distance, reflecting discomfort over his involvement and earlier comments involving India. The ceremony ran into delays, and while individual awards were handed out, the trophy presentation did not take place in full.<\/p>\n

    Eventually, Naqvi left the venue with the trophy. Even though India won the tournament, the team has not yet received the trophy through a formal process.
