Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has opened up about what he calls the abrupt, self-inflicted end to his international career\u2014claiming that choosing to focus on the Indian Premier League triggered a serious rift with the governing establishment, ultimately leaving him out of the England setup.<\/p>\n

Pietersen on the fallout behind his England exit<\/h2>\n

  1. Pietersen said that in the late 2000s he made major sacrifices because the England and Wales Cricket Board was hesitant to let players under central contracts take part in the IPL.<\/li>\n
  2. He added that his position sparked a long-running conflict that, in his view, determined how his final chapter with England unfolded.<\/li>\n
  3. Pietersen described the episode as career-changing, stating that he \u201cmade big sacrifices\u201d and \u201clost\u201d his international place because the \u201cestablishment\u201d turned against him.<\/li>\n
  4. He argued that his England career ended too soon, pointing out that he finished at 33 years old after playing 104 Tests.<\/li>\n
  5. He claimed he believed he could have gone on to play far longer at Test level, estimating that he should have reached between 150 and 160 matches and scored roughly 12,000 to 13,000 runs.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In his Test career, Pietersen finished with 8,181 runs at an average of 47.28, including 23 centuries and 35 half-centuries.<\/p>\n

    Pietersen also said the decision to play IPL cricket at a time when it collided with England\u2019s commitments became a power struggle with the board, calling it a highly publicised flashpoint in English cricket.<\/p>\n

    Why he believes it helped future IPL-ready England players<\/h2>\n

    1. Despite the personal cost, Pietersen believes his stance ultimately cleared the way for present-day England players to take part in franchise leagues more freely.<\/li>\n
    2. He shared that he recently spoke with Jos Buttler and recalled Buttler saying \u201cthank you,\u201d which Pietersen interpreted as appreciation for the sacrifices he made.<\/li>\n
    3. Pietersen said he feels modern players can now enjoy the benefits that were not available to him in the same way.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      He further suggested the conflict at the time was intense, saying the ECB used media outlets to target him, though he chose not to go too far into the details. Pietersen added that the matter was widely reported and that he now lives a \u201chappy, peaceful\u201d life.<\/p>\n
