A major break for Mumbai came in the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and Punjab Kings (PBKS) eventually moved to secure him. After that, the young batter had to wait for his moment \u2014 though he insists it was never true \u201cwaiting\u201d, more like sharpening his tools.<\/p>\n<h3>Quick facts<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Suryansh Shedge is 23 and built his early reputation through domestic cricket, including the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.<\/li>\n<li>He has played two IPL 2026 matches so far; against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on April 28, he faced two balls.<\/li>\n<li>Against Gujarat Titans (GT) on Sunday night, Shedge scored 57 off 29 balls at No. 6.<\/li>\n<li>PBKS were 36\/4 in the seventh over before Shedge and Marcius Stoinis added a 79-run stand off 44 balls.<\/li>\n<li>Shedge hit three sixes and two fours in the Manav Suthar over (14th of the innings).<\/li>\n<li>PBKS finished on 163\/9 and still reached the chase in 19.5 overs.<\/li>\n<li>Shedge later said he nicked the last ball of Kagiso Rabada\u2019s spell and believes letting it go could have changed the outcome.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>His latest showing came in his second IPL 2026 game, following a brief outing against RR where he faced just two deliveries on April 28. He has not yet had much of a chance to display his medium-pace bowling, but his batting in this innings underlined the power-hitting foundations PBKS are looking for in an Indian finisher.<\/p>\n<p>Ambati Rayudu highlighted Shedge\u2019s ability to go big when asked what stood out most about the youngster. Rayudu pointed to the confidence required for \u201cbig shots\u201d, noting that Shedge has even won a final and produced a match-winning knock in the Mushtaq Ali final. From there, Rayudu said the transition into the IPL and the way Shedge handled this innings made the impression even stronger.<\/p>\n<h3>79-run rescue at No. 6<\/h3>\n<p>Shedge walked out at number six versus GT when PBKS were reeling at 36 for 4 in the seventh over. The situation worsened soon after, as Shreyas Iyer departed to make it 47 for 5. Shedge then steadied the innings and combined with Marcius Stoinis to build a 79-run partnership off only 44 balls.<\/p>\n<p>During that run, Shedge struck more freely than Stoinis and ended the stand with three fours and five sixes. A particularly damaging stretch arrived in the 14th over, bowled by left-armer Manav Suthar, when Shedge launched three sixes and two fours in that single spell, taking advantage of the pace and flight to place the ball into the slot.<\/p>\n<p>Rayudu also connected the hitting to how the over unfolded. He said Suthar\u2019s delivery offered loose balls, but stressed that Shedge still hung in there and looked comfortable clearing the ground. Rayudu added that if a player\u2019s strength as an Indian batter entering the IPL is to attack in this way, then much of the battle is already won \u2014 after that, it comes down to reading the game and choosing the right moments.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Shedge ultimately gave his wicket away at a crucial point. With PBKS not yet in a position of dominance, he tried to cut the final ball of Kagiso Rabada\u2019s spell in the 16th over. The hard length denied him room, and he nicked the ball through to the wicketkeeper. PBKS ended up 163 for 9, a score that felt below par, but they did manage to push the chase to 19.5 overs.<\/p>\n<p>After the dismissal, Shedge reflected on the decision. He said he believes it was the last delivery of Rabada\u2019s spell and admitted that, in hindsight, he could have let it go. Shedge added that if he had done so, PBKS might have scored another 20 to 25 runs, which would have made things easier \u2014 but he also insisted that 160 (163) remained a fighting total. He concluded by emphasizing effort, and then acknowledged that he should have stayed where he was because he felt set.<\/p>\n<p>He also addressed his IPL rhythm this season, explaining that he did not immediately break into PBKS\u2019 XI. Both of the matches he has played have come against his own team\u2019s losses so far, with PBKS down to just two defeats in the tournament at that stage. Despite that, Shedge suggested time away from the playing XI may have worked in his favour.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever he is thrown into a situation, Shedge said he tries to be ready for it. He linked the time on the bench to preparation and mental clarity, and revealed that he has been in frequent conversation with Ricky Ponting and has also been speaking often with his captain, Iyer, whom he knows well. The message, Shedge said, is simple: when the opportunity knocks, you must be prepared and take it firmly with both hands.<\/p>\n<p>He added that he has always enjoyed challenges since he was young, and that in domestic cricket this season he has also helped his side escape pressure, including work in the Under-23 and other competitions. Shedge feels he thrives in those demanding moments, and going forward he does not want to predict which situation he will face.
