Five-time champions Mumbai Indians are teetering on the edge of the IPL 2026 playoffs race, with their qualification hopes hanging by a thread. A defeat to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Wankhede Stadium would effectively seal Mumbai\u2019s exit from the postseason equation. The spotlight has largely fallen on captain Hardik Pandya, whose returns with both bat and ball have failed to match the impact he is expected to deliver in high-pressure situations.<\/p>\n
On the eve of the match, former India batter Sadagoppan Ramesh questioned the approach of the 32-year-old all-rounder. Ramesh argued that Hardik has not taken enough responsibility for steering the team through problems, suggesting that the captain should do more \u201cfrom the front\u201d rather than expecting others to correct course.<\/p>\n
Ramesh pointed to Hardik\u2019s season output as evidence of a troubling trend. In the eight IPL 2026 matches Hardik has played so far, he has scored 146 runs, striking at 136.45. With the ball, Ramesh said the skipper has also not delivered the breakthroughs the team would need, taking only four wickets while maintaining an average of more than 61.<\/p>\n
Ramesh\u2019s criticism went beyond statistics, focusing on captaincy behaviour during crunch moments. He believes players will not fully buy into a plan if the captain is perceived to be holding back rather than leading by example.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf a captain isn\u2019t leading from the front, the team won\u2019t go all-in,\u201d Ramesh said on Star Sports Tamil. \u201cThe players are smart enough to know whether the captain is actually taking charge or hiding behind. If you stay behind, the effort levels won\u2019t reach the standards you want.\u201d<\/p>\n
He also suggested that Hardik\u2019s decision-making in tense phases has not reflected the kind of aggression required at the top level. In Ramesh\u2019s view, the captain is not stepping up when the game demands it, and instead appears to delegate problem-solving to others until late.<\/p>\n
Ramesh added that Hardik\u2019s role in decisive overs has not matched his reputation from earlier stages of his career. He referenced the contrast with past captaincy and pressure-handling, saying that Hardik previously excelled in critical bowling spells, but has not replicated that influence with Mumbai Indians.<\/p>\n
Ramesh further noted that discussions around Suryakumar Yadav\u2019s current form are justified, but he argued that Hardik is not drawing enough attention for his own contributions. He claimed Hardik has not made the most of key opportunities during the powerplay, both in batting and bowling.<\/p>\n
\u201cHardik Pandya gets two chances in a game, with bat and ball,\u201d Ramesh said. \u201cA lot of people point to Suryakumar Yadav\u2019s struggles, but while Surya is failing with the bat, Hardik is falling short in both batting and bowling. His strike rate has been poor in this IPL, and he has also leaked runs with the ball.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ramesh also singled out Hardik\u2019s utilisation of bowlers during the powerplay, stating that the captain has been using the options available to him in an ineffective manner.<\/p>\n
Mumbai Indians currently sit ninth in the IPL 2026 standings.
