Dinesh Karthik\u2019s IPL journey has been defined by reinvention. After beginning his franchise career with Delhi Daredevils, he went on to represent Kings XI Punjab, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Lions and Kolkata Knight Riders. The former India wicketkeeper-batter eventually wrapped up his IPL playing stint with RCB in IPL 2024\u2014but his relationship with the Bengaluru side continued, with a new role as batting coach and mentor. Karthik has now detailed how Virat Kohli\u2019s involvement and encouragement played a crucial part in his decision to take up the coaching path.<\/p>\n
Karthik described how the transition began while he was still active in the competition. As he approached the end of his playing career in 2024, he said Mo\u2014short for team director Mo\u2014asked whether he would be interested in joining RCB in a coaching capacity. Karthik explained that it was a difficult period for the franchise, with the team enduring a rough run that saw them lose either six of seven or seven of eight matches (his memory was not exact), leaving them with a \u201cmountain to climb.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite the chaos of that season, Karthik insisted he was personally drawn to the idea. He said discussions were happening while he was still playing, and that he was also speaking about the possibility with his wife and Mo. He added that Malolan Rangarajan was another important influence during the process, sharing what the role could look like without forcing any rigid direction on him.<\/p>\n
While Mo\u2019s confidence helped shape the conversation, Karthik said it was his repeated interactions with Virat Kohli that ultimately pushed him over the edge. He stated that Kohli spoke to him towards the back end of the season and delivered a message that was both simple and persuasive.<\/p>\n
According to Karthik, when the offer came for him after he had \u201chung up\u201d his boots, Mo called again to confirm that RCB were keen. Karthik added that Mo also mentioned Andy Flower\u2019s positive reaction, and that the team felt bringing in a couple of Indian coaching staff would strengthen the setup.<\/p>\n
Then came another exchange with Kohli. Karthik said Virat told him that he should take the opportunity and suggested it would be a good fit, framing it as a challenge worth embracing. Karthik added that respect from a player of Kohli\u2019s stature mattered significantly in his final call.<\/p>\n
Karthik also linked his decision-making to a broader sense of what RCB\u2019s future could hold. He suggested that RCB\u2019s triumph in IPL 2025 carries a weight similar to the 2007 T20 World Cup victory. He explained that he was part of the Indian team that won the inaugural T20 World Cup, placing that achievement high on his personal list.<\/p>\n
When asked what the defining moment of his cricket career was, Karthik said the World Cup win naturally comes up first. However, he placed RCB\u2019s title win close behind, arguing that it edges other major successes because of the patience required \u2014 emphasising that RCB waited 18 years to lift the trophy. He added that fans\u2019 passion makes the moment feel like more than celebration, describing a sense of yearning and a feeling of \u201cgiving back\u201d once the wait finally ends.<\/p>\n
