Bumrah has been the sharper concern. The Mumbai Indians spearhead has taken just three wickets across 10 matches, making his season a standout talking point for all the wrong reasons. Arshdeep, meanwhile, has had a more stop-start run for Punjab Kings\u2014showing moments of real threat with the new ball and in spells, but also suffering from periods where his deliveries have been punished and his figures have suffered as a result.<\/p>\n
Shastri tied the broader issue to workload management, pointing out that Bumrah\u2019s fitness and role have been closely monitored since his return from back trouble. India have approached his usage with caution across formats, and the BCCI has also treated his workload carefully after his comeback. Shastri highlighted that Bumrah\u2019s 2025-26 commitments included demanding red-ball assignments before the T20 World Cup, followed by another heavy run of matches leading into the IPL schedule.<\/p>\n
For Arshdeep, Shastri framed the problem differently. While the season has not been a complete failure, he has not been able to sustain the consistent control that his T20 role requires\u2014especially during the death overs, where repeated high-pressure execution is essential. In other words, his campaign has featured the kind of fluctuations that can happen when rhythm gets disrupted over a long tournament and bowlers are asked to repeat their best under constant pressure.<\/p>\n
Speaking on air, Shastri argued that elite bowlers cannot simply \u201cswitch on\u201d again after a rest day, even if the schedule provides breaks. He suggested the signs of strain are visible among established performers who have carried large volumes of cricket for extended periods, including time spent playing for India and featuring in major multi-match tournaments.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust looking at how the season has played out, and seeing what\u2019s happening to some of the established bowlers who\u2019ve carried so much cricket across the year\u2014playing for India, going through World Cups and all of that\u2014there are clear signs of mental fatigue,\u201d Shastri said during commentary.<\/p>\n
His comment carried direct relevance for Bumrah, whose IPL 2026 output has dropped well below the level he has set for himself over the years for both franchise and country. With Mumbai Indians\u2019 bowling unit struggling through the tournament, Bumrah\u2019s lack of wickets has stood out sharply, given the benchmark he has maintained previously.<\/p>\n
Shastri\u2019s message was that recovery is not instant and that players are still human beings under physical and mental strain. \u201cYou must remember these guys are human. It does take its toll,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not that they can, on a day off, go to a petrol station, fill some gas and get into the groove again the next day. It doesn\u2019t happen that way.\u201d He added that \u201chuman beings need time to recover,\u201d while also acknowledging that it remains a hard grind in professional sport.<\/p>\n
He also underlined that the point was not an excuse for poor performances. Instead, it was a reminder that fast-bowling workloads have consequences.
