Now, Cricket Australia is reportedly trying to prevent a similar drain on Australia\u2019s resources, with a major contract aimed at keeping elite stars tied to national duty. <\/p>\n

Cricket Australia\u2019s reported plan to keep Pat Cummins focused<\/h2>\n

  1. Cricket Australia is said to have moved quickly after an IPL franchise reportedly explored luring Pat Cummins into becoming a full-time T20 freelancer.<\/li>\n
  2. Months after that reported approach, CA is understood to have offered Cummins a landmark deal worth $12 million to ensure he remains committed to Australia, rather than shifting permanently to franchise-only cricket.<\/li>\n
  3. The contract, as reported, is designed to make national priorities\u2014particularly Test cricket\u2014non-negotiable for Cummins up to 2029.<\/li>\n
  4. The proposed extension is reportedly valued at $4 million per year across three years.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The report also suggested that Cricket Australia is in talks with other leading performers, with Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne among those discussed for comparable long-term security arrangements.<\/p>\n

    Asked whether Australia\u2019s top players deserve better pay and more stability for the long haul, CA\u2019s head of cricket James Allsopp offered a clear endorsement of the idea. He said the players have earned the right to be rewarded for long-term, multi-format contributions, and that there is a limit to what can be sustained under existing constraints\u2014making improved arrangements a priority.<\/p>\n

    Why the timing matters for Australia<\/h2>\n

    2. Australia are set to play 21 Tests over the next 12 months, placing extra importance on retaining key personnel for the longest format.<\/li>\n
    3. Cummins is expected to make a significant return as Test captain following recovery from a back injury.<\/li>\n
    4. During the 2025\/26 Ashes series at home, he appeared in only one of Australia\u2019s five Tests while dealing with the injury.<\/li>\n
    5. He also missed the T20 World Cup and the opening phase of IPL 2026 with Sunrisers Hyderabad.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Interest from franchises is not new. Earlier, in October, the same publication reported that an unnamed IPL franchise had approached Cummins and Head with a \u201cmonster\u201d $10 million offer to step away from international cricket and become full-time franchise players.
