For KKR, Varun\u2019s World Cup run had looked like a statement. He finished tied for the tournament\u2019s highest wicket tally alongside Jasprit Bumrah, taking 14 scalps. Yet from the Super-8 phase onwards, other teams appeared to read his \u201cmystery\u201d spin more effectively. His wicket haul dropped sharply: he managed only five wickets across the last five World Cup matches, and his economy rate climbed beyond nine.<\/p>\n
The dip carried into the early part of the IPL. Varun remained wicketless in his first two appearances and was then forced out due to a hand injury. The absence stretched his wait for wickets in the league as well\u2014he did not register in the leading wicket-takers\u2019 list until his fourth IPL outing, against Gujarat Titans. In that game in Ahmedabad, he returned figures of 2\/34.<\/p>\n
After getting back among the wickets, Varun began to show signs of his sharper, more controlled spell-making. In recent games, he has been using the crease well and adding small, deliberate variations that have helped him make breakthroughs at key stages.<\/p>\n
KKR mentor Dwayne Bravo felt the injury break did Varun some good. The former West Indies allrounder suggested that taking time away can restore rhythm, especially after a demanding international schedule.<\/p>\n
Bravo\u2019s comments highlighted the broader context: Varun is considered a world-class spinner, and while his ability was never questioned, timing and freshness can matter. He also noted that the group has supported Varun throughout his recovery and return to action.<\/p>\n
On the other side, Delhi Capitals\u2019 Kuldeep Yadav is dealing with a troublesome season. The rust that built up from spending much of India\u2019s T20 World Cup campaign warming the bench appears to be lingering in the IPL as well. Kuldeep has been accused of bowling deliveries that are too short, and his wicket output has remained limited\u2014he has taken only seven wickets in 10 matches while conceding at more than 10 runs per over.<\/p>\n
Despite the struggles, teammate David Miller offered support for Kuldeep and defended his value as a match-impacting player. Miller stressed that character matters and that the team benefits from having players who can turn games, even if their performances sometimes fluctuate.<\/p>\n
Miller also acknowledged that there have been a couple of matches where Kuldeep did not deliver as effectively as he could have, but he still framed Kuldeep as someone to back for the bigger picture.<\/p>\n
Axar Patel, however, has managed a stronger season than his fellow spinner partner. While his numbers are not in the \u201cwould be proud\u201d category for most elite spinners, he has still been DC\u2019s leading wicket-taker this campaign. Axar has taken nine wickets in 10 games, a haul that places him among the team\u2019s most dependable options.<\/p>\n
Even so, captaincy has added an extra layer of scrutiny. Some of the choices Axar has made as skipper have drawn criticism, and that attention could be building pressure as he looks to balance tactics with execution.<\/p>\n
