Young Mumbai and Punjab Kings allrounder Suryansh Shedge has carried more than just batting numbers in his cricket bag\u2014he has also kept the memory of advice and encouragement from some of the biggest names in the game. The 23-year-old recently spoke about how Rohit Sharma\u2019s praise, Ricky Ponting\u2019s straight talk, and Shreyas Iyer\u2019s calm guidance have shaped his mindset, especially as he looks to build momentum in IPL 2025 after a difficult early spell.<\/p>\n

From Syed Mushtaq Ali praise to Ranji-ready confidence<\/h2>\n

  1. Shedge says he still vividly remembers the lift he felt when Rohit Sharma complimented his explosive batting during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The moment came after Rohit joined Mumbai ahead of a Ranji Trophy match in the 2024\u201325 domestic season.<\/li>\n
  2. Playing at No 6, Shedge had produced several quick cameos that helped Mumbai secure the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy at Hyderabad. In the final against Madhya Pradesh, he struck 36 not out off 15 balls; in the quarterfinal versus Baroda, he made 36 not out from 12 deliveries; and in the last league match against Andhra, he scored 30 off just eight balls.<\/li>\n

    2. He found IPL 2025 tough, managing only seven runs across five matches at an average of 2.33.<\/li>\n
    3. After that, he spent the first eight matches on the bench before finally getting an opportunity.<\/li>\n
    4. Once he returned to the XI, he made an immediate impact: he scored 3 not out in one outing, followed it with a composed 57 off 29 balls against Gujarat Titans, and then added a quick 25 off 17 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad in his first three matches after the wait.<\/li>\n
    5. Shedge believes the improvement came from becoming more instinctive at the crease rather than overthinking every delivery.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      He explained that one key adjustment was shifting from pre-meditation to instinct, even during practice, and that change helped him find better results as the season progressed.<\/p>\n

      Ricky Ponting\u2019s \u2018stay ready\u2019 message<\/h2>\n

      Shedge also described a \u201cheart-to-heart\u201d conversation with Punjab Kings head coach and former Australia captain Ricky Ponting. During their discussion, Shedge admitted he had sometimes felt frustrated about not getting a game, but Ponting encouraged him to stay prepared and focus on the present.<\/p>\n

      1. Shedge said Ponting\u2019s talks revolved around how well he was batting in the nets and how an opportunity could arrive at any time.<\/li>\n
      2. He recalled that after the fourth or fifth match, following a net session, Ponting pulled him aside and asked whether he was frustrated.<\/li>\n
      3. At first, Shedge said he replied \u201cNo,\u201d but Ponting asked him to be honest, after which Shedge admitted that he did feel it sometimes.<\/li>\n
      4. Ponting then explained that several players from the same franchise could slot into the playing XI of other teams, stressing how easily players can be pulled into negativity.<\/li>\n
      5. He told Shedge that the harder challenge was staying in the moment\u2014continuing preparation so that when the chance comes, the player is mentally switched on and ready.<\/li>\n
      6. For Shedge, that conversation became a major motivator, and he described it as one of the best coaching experiences he has had.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Another factor Shedge values at Punjab Kings is the comfort he feels with captain Shreyas Iyer.           In Mumbai, Shedge trains under former India player and selector Jatin Paranjape at the Vasu Paranjape Cricket Centre. Paranjape has described Shedge as a player with big potential, praising him as the next big name in the making for Mumbai and Indian cricket.<\/p>\n

          Shedge also shared the core advice he receives, which centers on \u201cstaying in the present.\u201d He said Paranjape\u2019s guidance is simple: focus on what can be done today, not on tomorrow or yesterday. Shedge added that whenever he feels himself overthinking, Paranjape encourages him to come and talk things through, whether the topic is cricket or life\u2014so that he can feel light at bedtime and be ready for the next day.<\/p>\n

          When asked about Punjab Kings\u2019 multiple fielding mistakes in IPL 2026 so far, Shedge pushed back on singling out his franchise.
