Punjab Kings (PBKS) delivered a commanding batting performance to set a challenging target of 211 against Delhi Capitals (DC) in their IPL meeting at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on Monday evening. After being sent in, PBKS made the chase difficult from the outset with an explosive opening spell and a controlled finish that carried them to 210\/5 in 20 overs.<\/p>\n
PBKS launched their innings with real intent as openers Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya took Mitchell Starc apart for 22 runs in the opening over. That start produced the highest first-over total by Punjab in IPL history, eclipsing the 21 they had scored against Mumbai Indians earlier in the season at Wankhede.<\/p>\n
The 22-run first over was also a major talking point for Delhi, with it representing the second-highest number of runs conceded by the Capitals in a first over in an IPL match. Delhi had previously allowed 23 runs in the opening over against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens in 2024.<\/p>\n
Punjab\u2019s momentum never dipped, as they raced to the 50-run mark in just 2.4 overs\u2014marking the quickest team fifty PBKS have recorded in the IPL. By the time the fourth over ended, the hosts were cruising at 59\/0.<\/p>\n
Priyansh brought up his fifth half-century of the tournament in the fifth over, reaching the milestone off only 24 deliveries. The left-handed batter kept the innings moving smoothly, ensuring the batting side maintained its tempo throughout the early phase.<\/p>\n
At the end of the powerplay, Punjab were in a comfortable position on 72\/0, looking well set to build a significant total.<\/p>\n
Delhi finally made contact during the fifth ball of the seventh over when fast bowler Mukesh Kumar ended the opening partnership of 78 by dismissing Prabhsimran for 18. Soon after, Madhav Tiwari struck in the ninth over, removing the in-form Priyansh for 56 off 33 balls, and Punjab slipped to 97\/2.<\/p>\n
Despite losing two wickets, PBKS responded positively and reached the 100-run mark shortly thereafter, finishing the 10th over at 107\/2.<\/p>\n
From there, captain Shreyas Iyer and Cooper Connolly steadied the innings and maintained a healthy run rate. Punjab closed the 15th over on 149\/2, with Iyer driving the acceleration.<\/p>\n
Early in the 18th over, Shreyas reached another landmark\u2014his 32nd IPL half-century\u2014coming off 32 balls. However, on the fourth delivery of the same over, Madhav struck again, dismissing Connolly for 38. At that stage, Punjab were still firmly placed at 187\/3.<\/p>\n
During the 19th over, Mitchell Starc struck twice in consecutive deliveries, first dismissing Marcus Stoinis and then removing Shashank Singh to bring the game briefly back into the balance for Delhi.<\/p>\n
Punjab\u2019s response was immediate though. Suryansh Shedge launched a rapid counterattack, smashing 16 runs off the next four balls, helping PBKS cross the 200-run mark despite the late wickets. Iyer finished unbeaten on 59 off 36 balls, while Shedge contributed a quickfire 21* as Punjab posted 210\/5 in their 20 overs.<\/p>\n
Iyer\u2019s innings also added a notable record: he became the third batter in IPL history to register three straight fifty-plus scores against Delhi Capitals, joining Virat Kohli and Rahul Dravid in that feat.<\/p>\n
