Delhi Capitals kept their IPL 2026 campaign breathing with a high-pressure chase that looked unlikely after a shaky batting start. Punjab Kings had built a strong platform with 205\/5, but the match turned from the middle overs as Axar Patel, David Miller and Ashutosh Sharma seized control to steer DC to 216\/7 in 19 overs and win by three wickets. The result dealt Punjab another blow in their ongoing struggle to defend 200-plus totals, marking their ninth such failure in the league and extending their losing run to a fourth consecutive defeat.<\/p>\n

Match rundown: how the chase unfolded<\/h2>\n

  1. Punjab Kings set the tone with 210\/5 in their 20 overs, with Priyansh Arya top-scoring on 56 off 33 and Shreyas Iyer striking 59 off 36. Suryansh Shedge contributed 21 off 8, while Madhav Tiwari produced 2\/40.<\/li>\n
  2. Delhi Capitals chased the target successfully, finishing on 216\/7 in 19 overs. David Miller made 51 off 28, Axar Patel scored 56 off 30 and Ashutosh Sharma struck 24 off 10. Arshdeep Singh returned 2\/21.<\/li>\n
  3. Priyansh Arya began the Powerplay in confident fashion after Mitchell Starc offered him a \u201chit-me\u201d delivery right at the start. Arya deposited the ball for six, the first of his six Powerplay hits.<\/li>\n
  4. Starc\u2019s opening spell was erratic, and it cost Punjab early: one short ball went over KL Rahul\u2019s outstretched hands for five wides, Arya added another six via a leading edge, and Prabhsimran punished an overpitched ball for four.<\/li>\n
  5. Arya kept the momentum going by clearing the square-leg boundary off Auqib Nabi and then smashing two more sixes off Lungi Ngidi to accelerate the innings.<\/li>\n
  6. Punjab reached their quickest team fifty in just 2.4 overs, but Nabi then tightened the rhythm with an eight-run over, even as Arya moved to a half-century off 24 balls at the start of the sixth over.<\/li>\n
  7. Despite the early dominance, the surface still offered something to the pacers, and Punjab were held to 72\/0 as the innings progressed.<\/li>\n
  8. Shreyas Iyer, who had looked off-colour through three straight losses, answered that criticism with a more assured knock. Even when he mis-hit a slower ball from Lungi Ngidi, the ball sailed over long-off for six, showing how much better he was reading the pace.<\/li>\n

  10. Madhav Tiwari\u2019s numbers (2\/40) did not fully reflect the variety he brought. He used smart changes and pace\/length shifts to trouble Arya, who became Tiwari\u2019s first IPL wicket when he found the deep point fielder.<\/li>\n
  11. Tiwari also removed Cooper Connolly, dismissing him with a well disguised slower bouncer. A 19-run fourth over, however, prevented what could have been an even cleaner performance for Tiwari.<\/li>\n
  12. At the death, Starc had an eventful 19th over. He struck early by removing Marcus Stoinis and Shashank Singh with the first two balls, but Suryansh Shedge refused to let the over slip away.<\/li>\n
  13. Starc\u2019s hat-trick ball was punished: Shedge struck it for six over long on. Then, expecting a yorker, Shedge moved deep into his crease and hit a boundary on the next delivery.<\/li>\n
  14. On the final ball of the over, Starc went round the stumps, yet Shedge still pulled the ball for another six, finishing the over with momentum.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Punjab\u2019s innings: where Delhi made the breaks<\/h2>\n

    Delhi Capitals\u2019 Powerplay was not built for spectacle, but it was effective. Yash Thakur struck back with a seam movement to remove Abishek Porel, Marco Jansen grabbed a sharp diving catch in the deep to dismiss KL Rahul, and Sahil Parakh produced a quick finish when he found Yuzvendra Chahal at short third with a cramped ramp shot. Punjab\u2019s score slipped to 33\/3.<\/p>\n

    Axar Patel and Tristan Stubbs steadied the innings to move DC up to 48\/3 after six overs, but the contest shifted again when Stubbs was run out in the ninth over. Connolly\u2019s direct-hit caused the dismissal, and that brought Axar and Miller together for what became the decisive phase.<\/p>\n

    What made the chase possible<\/h2>\n

    Several factors helped Delhi stay in the hunt: a slippery outfield, the presence of dew, and the stubborn batting partnership of Axar and Miller. As the stand grew, the dew increasingly disrupted movement while fielders struggled for traction in the deeper areas.<\/p>\n

    Axar, in particular, looked untethered and aggressive, swinging at wet-ball deliveries that came onto the bat nicely. He ended up scoring more in that innings than he had across the entire season so far, but his wicket in the 14th over arrived at the worst time for the chase\u2014he struck a Stoinis ball to Ben Dwarshuis at long on.<\/p>\n

    Punjab tried to drive the knife in further when Arshdeep returned for the 15th over. That over brought only five runs, and completed his spell with figures of 2\/21, giving Punjab a late-innings push.<\/p>\n

    Closing stages: the chase gets over the line<\/h2>\n

    1. Delhi required 68 off the final 30 balls, and the pressure felt \u201cArsheep-shaped\u201d as Punjab tightened their bowling.<\/li>\n
    2. Miller responded to the challenge by smashing Marco Jansen for 15 in an over, then adding two more sixes off Dwarshuis in the 17th over to reach a 27-ball fifty.<\/li>\n
    3. Even though Prabhsimran Singh went close to a major catch, the ball dropped and runs continued to flow.<\/li>\n
    4. Tiwari entered and struck a four by cutting behind point, taking 17 runs from the over.<\/li>\n
    5. Stoinis repeatedly offered Ashutosh Sharma deliveries in the slot, and Ashutosh made it count immediately with a four and a six to get started.<\/li>\n
    6. Tiwari also took advantage, depositing a hittable ball over deep backward square leg. That 19-run over reduced the equation to 19 needed off 12.<\/li>\n
    7. All the momentum came from Yash Thakur in the penultimate over: Tiwari finished unbeaten on 18 off 8, Ashutosh was dismissed for 24 off 10, and the final finishing touches were provided by Auqib Nabi with a four and a six.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Dharamsala\u2019s pace-first twist<\/h2>\n

      The match at Dharamsala had a distinct character: there was not a single over of spin bowled across the game. Axar Patel did not even take the field to bowl during the full 20-over spell, and Shreyas kept Yuzvendra Chahal away as the fixture was wrapped up with 39 deliveries of pace\u2014the second-highest tally of pace overs in a single IPL match.<\/p>\n
