Sunrisers Hyderabad were blown away by the Gujarat Titans in their IPL 2026 match in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, suffering an 82-run defeat while still remaining third on the points table. Even though SRH fell short in a chase of 169, the margin of loss and the way the Titans controlled key phases ensured the game felt decisive from start to finish.<\/p>\n

How the Titans took control<\/h2>\n

  1. At the halfway stage, SRH head coach Daniel Vettori said the side felt \u201csatisfied\u201d, but GT\u2019s pace attack continued to pile pressure after that.<\/li>\n
  2. Gujarat\u2019s seamers delivered the decisive burst: Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj, Jason Holder and Prasidh Krishna combined for 9 wickets for 82 runs across 14 overs.<\/li>\n
  3. SRH could not sustain their chase, with their innings ending in just 14.5 overs as the required run rate proved impossible to manage.<\/li>\n
  4. Vettori pointed to the challenge posed by GT\u2019s depth in seam bowling, noting they carried five quicks in the XI, with Arshad Khan named among them but not used.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Vettori also explained that SRH never got the opening they wanted, and that GT capitalised repeatedly, with their bowling described as \u201cbrilliant\u201d throughout.<\/p>\n

    SRH\u2019s bowling effort under the spotlight<\/h2>\n

    Despite being outclassed in the chase, SRH\u2019s bowling showed plenty of structure of its own. Pat Cummins and Praful Hinge kept things relatively tight, striking under six runs per over across their seven-over spell combined. Hinge and Sakib Hussain each claimed two wickets, while Eshan Malinga, though costly at 11.50 per over, still contributed to containing the Titans enough to restrict them to 168 for 5.<\/p>\n

    In the post-match conversation, Sanjay Bangar highlighted the tactical planning behind SRH\u2019s plan, calling it \u201cexceptional\u201d and focusing on how GT were forced to bat on difficult lines.<\/p>\n

    Bangar described how SRH targeted Sai Sudharsan with a leg-stump channel, limiting his ability to score from that area. He also stressed it was a rare sight to see Sudharsan register very few runs behind point on the off side, with his tally of 13 coming from that region during his 61 off 44 balls. Bangar additionally referenced SRH\u2019s field placements and execution, including how they refined their approach to Nishant Sindhu by keeping the third-man region tight and attempting the bouncer, plus a notable change in Pat Cummins\u2019 setup that pulled the mid-on fielder and reshaped the attacking angles.<\/p>\n

    Ambati Rayudu agreed with Bangar\u2019s assessment and added that the lack of early slower balls from GT had a clear impact. He said the Titans did not go to the slower option very early in their innings\u2014unlike how teams often do at other venues\u2014and relied on seam-up deliveries for a substantial period. Rayudu felt that approach suited the conditions, with GT increasing the pace variation only once the ball had aged and, crucially, managing the surface well.<\/p>\n

    Powerplay wickets and the batting picture<\/h2>\n

    1. Hinge produced the major powerplay breakthroughs, removing Shubman Gill for 5 and Jos Buttler for 7.<\/li>\n
    2. Sai Sudharsan carried his momentum through until the 17th over, but his scoring was heavily shaped by SRH\u2019s plans, resulting in a 61-ball 44-ball innings.<\/li>\n
    3. Washington Sundar provided the fastest scoring in GT\u2019s innings, striking a 33-ball fifty as momentum moved briefly in GT\u2019s favour.<\/li>\n
    4. Even with those contributions, SRH\u2019s early wickets and control ensured GT reached 168 for 5 rather than pushing beyond 180.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Vettori later reflected on the match phase when SRH lost four wickets inside the powerplay, including those of Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan. He said the team understood what they needed to do\u2014getting off to a strong start\u2014but that opening did not happen, leaving them to chase a total that never became comfortable.<\/p>\n

      Speaking on the chase, Vettori noted that if GT had managed a score of 200, the task would have been extremely hard. However, he felt a target of 169 still offered a genuine chance, while insisting there was no blame on the batting unit.
