NEW DELHI: Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer admitted he was genuinely frustrated after his side suffered a fifth straight loss in IPL 2026, describing the defeat to Mumbai Indians as \u201ca tough pill to swallow\u201d. With the playoffs already out of reach for MI, the visitors completed the chase of 201 in Dharamsala on Thursday and finished with six wickets to spare. That result left PBKS languishing on 13 points from 12 matches, putting their postseason hopes under intense strain.<\/p>\n
Speaking after the match, Shreyas refused to blame a single moment, even as the losing streak continued. He said the outcome was difficult to digest, but added that the game itself was contested in the proper spirit.<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, absolutely a tough pill to swallow, but I don\u2019t want to pinpoint any situation over here because it was a great game of cricket. Well fought game,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Punjab had looked in command after posting 200 for 8, but Mumbai\u2019s chase swung decisively thanks to Tilak Varma. The left-hander remained unbeaten on 75 from 33 balls, turning the innings pressure into a clean finish for the chase.<\/p>\n
Shreyas acknowledged Varma\u2019s impact and praised the way he managed the chase under pressure.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe played amazing. He was selecting his shots pretty well, and he maneuvered the field nicely, so credit to him,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Punjab\u2019s innings had started with a sense of control, but they had also shown signs of instability after losing wickets in the middle overs. Prabhsimran Singh led the scoring with 57, yet the middle-order collapse\u2014triggered by Shardul Thakur\u2019s four-wicket burst\u2014pulled them off course and left them wobbling at a key stage.<\/p>\n
Despite that setback, Shreyas pointed to a late cameo by Azmatullah Omarzai as the moment the innings changed direction. He described how Omarzai\u2019s hitting, particularly the scoops for six, shifted momentum and helped PBKS reach the 200-run mark.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt one point, we were looking at around 170 to 180, and from there he simply changed the momentum. Getting those scoops for sixes, from the 16th or 17th over, we gained momentum. Getting to 200 was a commendable performance from him,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
With the defeat widening the gap in the playoff race, Punjab now face two must-win matches. Their next challenge is an afternoon clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Shreyas made it clear that the focus is on taking maximum points from the remaining games.<\/p>\n
\u201cDefinitely excited for the next opportunity. It\u2019s an afternoon game, and we\u2019ve got to win two out of two. It\u2019s going to be exciting. Can\u2019t wait to play them,\u201d Shreyas said.<\/p>\n
