Former England batter Kevin Pietersen has floated the idea of becoming a mentor for Chennai Super Kings, joking that the team’s base would make trips to the Maldives far more convenient for him. The discussion quickly turned into a light-hearted IPL reunion theme after Pietersen’s comment drew attention to his own travel during IPL 2025.
The exchange began on Tuesday morning when a CSK supporter reached out to the franchise on social media, urging them to consider Pietersen for the mentoring role. “Dear CSK please bring KP as a Mentor,” the fan wrote.
Pietersen responded promptly, adding a travel-related twist. “Yes please. It is closer to Maldives. Easier travel for me,” he replied.
Once Pietersen’s message landed, Delhi Capitals entered the conversation by tagging KL Rahul. The tag was not random: Pietersen and Rahul had developed a friendly rapport in the previous season, with the duo frequently seen exchanging banter.
During IPL 2025, Pietersen was in fact appointed as a mentor for Delhi Capitals. Midway through that campaign, he took a family break to the Maldives—an episode that soon became a topic of conversation inside the dressing room. Rahul also leaned into the moment with a remark, taking a playful dig at the timing.
In a video posted by DC in 2025, KL Rahul said: “A mentor is someone who goes to the Maldives for two weeks mid-season.”
KP’s IPL journey, from debut to Delhi captaincy
Pietersen’s IPL story dates back to 2009, when he made his league debut for Royal Challengers Bangalore after being signed for a then-record fee of US$1.5 million (equivalent to Rs 13.95 crore in current terms).
While the early years did not yield overwhelming returns, Pietersen still contributed across matches. He managed 93 runs in six appearances, averaging 15.5. With the ball, he also picked up four wickets at a strike rate of 19.5, maintaining an economy rate of 6.53.
In February 2014, Delhi Daredevils moved for Pietersen ahead of IPL 2014 and handed him the captaincy. He had also represented the franchise earlier, playing for them in IPL 2012—his most productive season in the tournament.
In that standout 2012 campaign, Pietersen scored 305 runs at a strike rate of 147, including an unbeaten 103.
