Narine hailed as IPL’s best ever after another MoM masterclass for KKR

A major discussion has erupted in IPL circles after a former India international suggested that West Indies and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) spinner Sunil Narine is the greatest player the league has ever seen. The debate has only intensified because Narine’s record and impact continue to stand out long after his international career wound down.

Narine’s status in the IPL debate

The former batter’s comments have landed at a time when Narine is still central to KKR’s identity in the tournament. He has played more than 50 One-Day Internationals and over half a dozen T20 Internationals, but it is the IPL where his influence has become almost unmatched. Retiring from international cricket in 2023, and having last played for his country in 2019, Narine remains a dominant figure in franchise T20 cricket.

Why his early KKR seasons changed the league

Narine’s first IPL campaign with KKR in 2012 is widely remembered as a turning point. That year, the franchise won the title for the first time, with Narine producing a breakthrough bowling spell across the tournament. He finished the campaign with 24 wickets from 15 matches, maintaining an economy rate of 5.47—numbers that underlined how difficult he was to time.

His ability to deliver in high-pressure moments continued to show up in later title runs:

  • In 2014, during another trophy-winning campaign, Narine took 21 wickets in 16 matches, keeping his economy rate at 6.35.
  • Two years ago, as KKR captured their third IPL championship, he again played a key role with 17 wickets in 15 games at an economy rate of 6.69.
  • That same season, Narine contributed with the bat as well, scoring 488 runs at a strike rate of 180.74, including one century and three half-centuries.

Rayudu’s claim and Narine’s current form

With those performances in mind, Ambati Rayudu argued that the West Indian should be viewed as the best of all time in the IPL. In his comments, Rayudu called Narine “the greatest” and praised him as a complete match-winner who can influence outcomes with both bat and ball. He added that while many outstanding players have appeared in the league, Narine “always stands out” and is “at the top of the list” for him.

This season, Narine has continued to baffle batters with a style that often looks unplayable at the crease. So far, he has taken 13 wickets in 11 matches at an economy rate of 6.70, with his mystery factor remaining intact despite the way T20 batting has evolved in recent years.

What makes the conversation even stronger is that Narine’s threat is not only about wicket-taking—it is also about how he disrupts planning. Even when batting strategies are more data-driven than ever, he continues to create doubt in the batter’s mind.

200th IPL match: Eden Gardens impact and praise

Narine’s latest statement came during KKR’s match against Gujarat Titans at home at Eden Gardens, where it was his 200th appearance in the IPL. In that game, he returned bowling figures of 2/29 from his four overs. His spell was highlighted as one of the main reasons Shubman Gill’s side were never truly in the chase of 248 throughout the innings.

For that performance, Narine was named Man of the Match, with the award reflecting how decisive his bowling was in Kolkata.

Sanjay Bangar backs the “legend” argument

Former India all-rounder Sanjay Bangar also added weight to Narine’s reputation as a league standout. Bangar pointed to the importance of longevity, noting that Narine has endured in a competition full of constant change. He also referred to the challenges Narine faced earlier in his career, including concerns around his action that were raised multiple times, before stating that Narine appears to have found a way to keep producing the same kind of overspin that batters associate with his skill set.

Bangar further explained that Narine’s bowling variations—especially the way the ball can turn in more than one direction—create massive uncertainty for batters. In his view, those combined qualities are what make Narine a legend of the league.
