Dhoni in CSK Nets Fuels IPL 2027 Retirement Buzz Ahead of CSK vs SRH

MS Dhoni’s next step in the IPL has become one of the biggest talking points in Chennai, with the Chennai Super Kings preparing for a pivotal IPL 2026 home meeting against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday. The match is set to be CSK’s last game at their home ground for the season, and the sight of Dhoni working in the nets has sparked fresh excitement among supporters. However, the former India captain has been absent from the playing XI this year, having been sidelined by a calf injury.

Alongside the on-field buzz, a cryptic social media message from spin great R Ashwin has quickly swept through the fanbase. Ashwin posted on X (formerly Twitter) that “Not happening today! In 2027? May be Don’t think any batting changes will happen. Akeal Hosein in ? #CSKVSRH,” leading many fans to read between the lines. Even though Ashwin did not explicitly link the opening part of the message to Dhoni, supporters were largely convinced it was a hint about the CSK icon’s timeline—suggesting that Dhoni may not be calling time on his IPL career this season.

In parallel, Harbhajan Singh added to the anticipation with a heartfelt appeal to Dhoni ahead of CSK’s final home match of the campaign. The former India off-spinner urged him to take the field, arguing that playing his last-ever IPL game at the MA Chidambaram Stadium would be the perfect way to honour the promise he has made to fans. Harbhajan’s message was simple: if the timing is right, Dhoni should deliver that farewell appearance at the iconic Chennai venue.

Harbhajan also pointed out that if Dhoni does not feature on Monday, it could mean he intends to return for the 2027 season to keep his word. Speaking about the emotional weight of the moment, Harbhajan reflected on Dhoni’s long association with Chennai and said the occasion feels especially meaningful given the uncertainty that has surrounded the former captain’s future.

“Look, he had said earlier that he would like to play his final match against Chennai, at Chennai’s ground. And now that time has come—this is the last match in Chennai. It’s possible that we may see Thala playing on Monday for the last time, and maybe this Chennai crowd will also be watching him play for the final time. And if he doesn’t play, then it means he’ll come back again next year. Then he’ll say, ‘Next year, you’ll see me playing my last match.’ You never know with him, but hopefully he will play,” Harbhajan said on JioHotstar.

Dhoni’s absence this season has been attributed to a calf injury, but with CSK set to host Sunrisers Hyderabad in Chennai on Monday, speculation about a possible farewell appearance has intensified once again. With fans already looking for signs of a late-season return, the stage is set for a match that could carry extra significance—whether Dhoni plays or chooses to extend the storyline into 2027.
