Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s 97 off 29 redefines IPL history in RR vs SRH Eliminator

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s IPL 2026 Eliminator performance against Sunrisers Hyderabad will be remembered for the kind of impact that instantly changes a franchise’s momentum. The 15-year-old produced a stunning 97 off just 29 deliveries, dragging Rajasthan Royals into Qualifier 2 and, in the process, rewriting a piece of IPL history that had stood in the record books for years. Sooryavanshi has now overtaken Chris Gayle’s long-standing mark for the most sixes in a single season, taking the lead with an incredible 65 maximums so far. If Rajasthan Royals go all the way to the IPL 2026 final, there is every chance he could add further to that total.

Rajasthan Royals didn’t just win the Eliminator—they dominated it. They built a massive 243/8 on the board, with Sooryavanshi’s explosive knock acting as the centrepiece of the innings. Chasing that imposing target, Sunrisers Hyderabad struggled to find any rhythm and eventually collapsed under the pressure, managing only 196 all out. During the powerplay, Jofra Archer proved particularly decisive, claiming three key wickets and setting the tone for a chase that never truly got going.

Sooryavanshi’s destructive batting also drew plenty of attention from former India batter and commentator Aakash Chopra, who broke down the teenager’s game on Star Sports’ JioStar show. Chopra pointed to the technical foundation of Sooryavanshi’s power—starting with the backlift, which he said helps create significant momentum for his hitting. He also highlighted how Sooryavanshi stands strongly at the crease and often chooses to strike either straight down the ground or towards the leg side, areas where his bottom hand can play a major role in finding clean contact.

Chopra felt there was more to Sooryavanshi than just brute force, though. He cited the maturity shown in certain moments—particularly the way the youngster waited and then lifted a slower ball from Sakib over the covers. In Chopra’s view, that combination of patience, balance, and execution is what separates raw power from sustained T20 dominance.

The former India opener then broadened the discussion to what Sooryavanshi represents for the future of the format. Chopra believes the teenager belongs to a new breed of T20 batters—players who have essentially grown up learning the game as a standalone sprint rather than a variation of longer cricket. “He is reminding us what a batter can become if they grow up on a T20-only diet,” Chopra said, adding that fearlessness appears to be built into his approach. While the current achievements have left many stunned, Chopra suggested that the next few seasons could bring even more record-breaking chapters—possibly even with him surpassing his own milestones.

Chopra also contrasted Sooryavanshi’s path with that of Chris Gayle, acknowledging Gayle’s status as a T20 icon but noting the difference in focus. Gayle, he reminded viewers, also had a Test triple century to his name, whereas Sooryavanshi has concentrated almost entirely on T20 cricket from a young age. For Chopra, that distinction helps explain why Sooryavanshi looks so perfectly suited to the demands of modern franchise cricket.

Finally, Chopra offered a direct glimpse into what could come next. With 65 sixes already recorded this season, he suggested the teenager could even reach 70 in the very next match. From there, the possibility becomes even more dramatic: Chopra hinted that Sooryavanshi might one day land on 100 sixes in a single IPL season, either next year or the year after.

With Qualifier 2 now in sight, all eyes will be on whether Rajasthan Royals can carry their momentum forward—and, crucially, whether Sooryavanshi can keep turning every opportunity into another maximum as the race for the Orange Cap and Purple Cap intensifies across the tournament.
