Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Fearless Rise: When Will BCCI Give Him a Senior Debut?

Look up “fearless cricket” and you might as well find Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s name next to it. The 15-year-old Rajasthan Royals batter has not only altered how young players bat, but also the mindset they’re expected to adopt under pressure. With names like Mohammed Shami, Josh Hazlewood, Jasprit Bumrah and Pat Cummins setting the standard around him, it would be easy to feel the weight of experience—yet Sooryavanshi has shown he doesn’t flinch.

Wednesday marked the first time Sooryavanshi appeared in an IPL Playoffs game, when Rajasthan Royals locked horns with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2026 Eliminator. His knock—97 off 29 balls—left little doubt about why fans have latched onto the nickname “Universe Baby Boss.”

Quick facts

  • Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made his first IPL Playoffs appearance in the IPL 2026 Eliminator vs Sunrisers Hyderabad.
  • He scored 97 off 29 balls in that Eliminator.
  • The knock came as Rajasthan Royals faced SRH on Wednesday.
  • Before IPL 2026 began, he attracted attention after being bought by Rajasthan Royals at age 13 for Rs 1 crore.
  • In his IPL debut, he hit six off Shardul Thakur.
  • He later won the U-19 World Cup for India with a knock of 175 off 80 balls in the final.
  • In the league stage so far, he has 680 runs in 15 matches.
  • BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar said there are other talents ahead for international selection when asked about a senior debut.
  • Agarkar highlighted Yashasvi Jaiswal as already part of the ODI set-up and mentioned Sooryavanshi’s India A call-up for a tri-series in Sri Lanka.

Even before IPL 2026 kicked off, the buzz around Sooryavanshi grew at a rapid pace. At just 13 years old, Rajasthan Royals picked him up for Rs 1 crore, and early glimpses of talent quickly became talking points. His IPL debut only intensified the spotlight, highlighted by a six off Shardul Thakur that made it clear he could strike at once, not after settling in.

A rise that came with expectations

The U-19 World Cup then added another layer to the hype. Despite a shaky start, Sooryavanshi delivered when it mattered most, blasting 175 off just 80 balls to help India lift the trophy, while England were left with no real answer. From that moment, the excitement around him was matched by the growing pressure that comes when a prodigy is expected to keep producing.

That tension followed him straight into the new IPL season. After he struck a four and a six off the first two balls he faced against Matt Henry, spectators were already on edge. The early pattern became a theme: since then, it has felt like sixes keep arriving regardless of the venue or the opponent.

His impact has been reflected in the numbers as well. With 680 runs across 15 matches, he has established himself as one of the league’s standout performers. While Virat Kohli and Sai Sudharsan remain strong contenders in any conversation around batting dominance, Sooryavanshi’s form has made him a serious favourite to chase the Orange Cap.

So much has been his output that the conversation is shifting from “youngest ever” milestones to even bigger “best ever” benchmarks, suggesting the ceiling of his current season may be higher than most expected. The way he has elevated his game has made those records feel within reach rather than wishful thinking.

International debut: not rushing it

Even so, the question of a senior international debut isn’t going away. When BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar was asked about the topic, he gave a notably cautious response. As he named the squad for the Test and ODI series against Afghanistan, he pointed out that other players are already in line for selection before Sooryavanshi, explicitly mentioning Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Agarkar also underlined that Sooryavanshi has recently been chosen for India A in the upcoming tri-series in Sri Lanka. The message was clear: the pathway exists, but it’s being paced deliberately.

“We picked him for the India A team because he is young and immensely promising. The idea is to give these youngsters exposure. Yashasvi Jaiswal is already part of the ODI set-up as well. As impressive as Sooryavanshi has been, there are others who have performed strongly too. We are very excited about him and hopefully he can showcase his talent when he travels with the A team.”

At 15, it’s hard to imagine what more a player could do to force the conversation forward—yet the selectors appear to be weighing the long-term picture. In this sense, it seems the BCCI may choose caution, even if his form is hard to ignore. After all, it’s one thing to dominate in domestic cricket; it’s another to jump straight into the highest level of international competition while still so early in a career.

For now, though, Sooryavanshi is doing everything within his control. Brilliant innings, a calm temperament, and his latest explosive showing against SRH—most recently in the Eliminator—have already underlined that he can perform on the biggest stage. The spotlight is clearly on him, and he has responded with deeds rather than promises.
